Problem with classic literature is that audiences want too much action

Milady sliding under the weapons fire and the sky becoming full the rather uncommon 17th Century airships.
Why even try to bring this story to the screen like this?

I agree.

The most annoying excuse I hear is that the original novel has been done so many times that we need a new updated version.

When was the last time that a version of the original novel was actually filmed?

BBC's Musketeers (2014): nope
The Three Musketeers (2011) nope
The Musketeer (2001) nope
The Three Musketeers (1993) nope
The Three Musketeers/Four Musketeers (1973/74) the closest version to the story of the novel.

So 40 years ago. Personally I think that it's about time that the original storyline was re-examined.

The '73 version is a very very good film.

However, i feel obliged to add in response to the thread header, there were a fair few fights in the original novels that were totally ommitted from the Michael York films.

You forgot about the Barbie version of Musketeers in 2009.

That said, I imagine Alexandre Dumas would've liked the action angle shown, adding to the swashbuckling style he was so fond of.

did you also watch it on channel4, Adcro?

The Three Musketeers was NOT considered respectable literature when it was written. The format it was published in was the 19th century equivalent to a Soap opera.
