Astonishingly average

Predictable stuff, but not offensively so...

I thought this film was really well crafted, and I do not agree, at all ,with some of that harsh criticism some people seem to have put into it (and, also, quite curiously, almost, personally!).
Ryan S. Harris (and we have no relation whatsoever lol in fact i don't even know how old he may be,however i'd say younger, or how he could ever look like, but I'd certainly like to see more of his future work, hopefully!) shows very, very promising skills for directing, with intelligence and sensibility, and, truly shines as a cinematographer.
While, i must agree that the plot of "Virus X" is at times formulaic and a bit predictable, I was still always very intrigued, and amused,as a Genre's fan, because the pace kept me constantly on the edge, and the slick images were beautifully shot: i do not have a problem at all, either, with a lot of (great) hand held camera's work, and in fact,I found that style, so wildly experimental, to become very effective to the narration of this film, dealing with futuristic, yet vaguely timely subject matters.
The editing, the music score, the sound mix, and all the other technical aspects of this presentation, were all above the average, and never less than compelling, I must say way better, than many other Lions Gate releases (a few in the past years were really amateur! But, this is grade A's stuff!).
Then i truly do not understand the cynical, judgemental critique of many readers to the actors! It's really not fair.
All the young actors playing the rogue scientists (maybe, with the exception of the truly bland Sasha Formoso, and of a weak Joe Zaso, playing the Professor) were instead all very good, and did a great job in handling material that might have sounded very out of place, if not so convincingly, and realistically expressed! A mention of honor, for me, goes to the very handsome lead, Jay Dai, whose acting was extremely great, and gripping and his looks were truly 'leading man' material. Hope to see more films of this gorgeous young man!
Sybil Danning looks fantastic, and,for any real lover of the Genre, she should have not been here, more enjoyable ,and, truly a great casting choice, for the role of the wealthy, elegant dark lady, plotting against humans. After way too many years spent playing insignificant cameos, she's got here(finally) the opportunity to 'come back', and also giving what I'd call a 'real' performance, worthy of her past.
Domiziano Arcangeli as Jerron, was quite exceptional. Even here, there was so much harsh criticism over his looks and performance, that, I can say (now, after having seen this movie) were so wrong and truly just annoying: i always loved this international unique actor, and he lately changes so effectively, from film to film, to have became one of the greatest assets of Genre cinema: if, you haven't seen his terrific work on the awesome "Samurai Avenger: The Blind Wolf" ,in the upcoming "Box of Shadows aka: The Ghostmaker"(which is,by the way, such a wonderful movie, i was so lucky to see, at one of its screenings, at the recent AFM Film Market in Santa Monica,CA),or even in the campy, funny cult "Werewolf in a Women Prison", and his great characterization of Popo, the wild, and amoral stylist, in the Showtime Network's innovative TV Series "Zalman King's ChromiumBlue",among many others, you cannot maybe really understand the true potential of this fabolous ex model, child actor, and euro teen heartthrob, who's today such a versatile player, and also a film producer,I read! I think that he made a great character out of his role, and was able to perfectly convey the enigmatic nature of the android, whose power goes crazy, when realizes, with extreme sensitivity, the really blessed living and 'feelings' of humans, bringing also, another interesting, and more introspective edgy meaning, to what could have been instead the usual caricature of a role, we have seen badly portrayed, too many times, like in a Sy/Fy average movie!
In fact, I'd say, to conclude my opinion, that, I do not agree, to call this film just 'astonishingly average', mainly, just, because of his work,of Sybil Danning's much appreciated return, and, as I mentioned first, and foremost, of this new director's very intriguing choices.
I feel now happy to have overcome my fear of wasting money by buying this other title, on Amazon, especially, after having read, some of those truly bad (and, really wrong!) reviews, posted on here, and I am very glad to have added this DVD's box to my very vast Genre's collection!
