HBO doesn't know what it has here

They already made one mistake last year cancelling Bored to Death and now the fate of Enlightened is up in the air. Girls is an ok show but Enlightened is better. The writing and acting are top notch and the show deserves to go out on it's own accord.

reply

Such a great show! HBO would be nuts to cancel!

reply

Yeah. How can they renew Girls and not this?

reply

They can renew Girls because Lena Dunham and her cast are a bunch of spoiled brats with Hollywood connections, they didn't have to grind out quality like Dern in order to get to this point and even though Laura's work takes a giant dump on Lena's quality-wise she doesn't have enough clout in the rigged system that is Hollywood, not unlike how Abadon is really.

reply

Laura Dern's parents were both established in the industry before she had her career. Just pointing that out.

But obviously, Laura Dern's and Mark White's talent and skill are light years beyond anyone in GIRLS.

reply

Not to mention that one of the producers of "Girls" is the master of hype, Judd Apatow.

But as someone else has pointed out, "Girls" isn't the enemy of "Enlightened." We live in a world where the two can peacefully coexist.

But "Enlightened" is in a league of its own.

reply

I think Girls is OK, but I love Enlightened. I am not always happy living in a world where the mediocre is lauded, while the brilliant is ignored(for the most part). I predict it won't be back. I hope I'm wrong.

reply

I've been optimistic about a third season, but I also doubt that it will be renewed. The way the finale ended sort of points to this. I suppose a third season could happen, but as it stands, the series ended with the main plot line neatly completed. Although we are left to wonder about many things, the ending was sufficient.

Who's High Pitch?

reply

Agreed, Laura had her foot in the door from a very young age. But, as an actress, she has developed and thrived on her own merits.

Who's High Pitch?

reply

She even filed for legal emancipation from her mother, who at the time was forbidding her to leave the country to film a movie (which eventually flopped--mama's always right.)

Because Girls gets comparitively undeserved hype from critics as well, not just the public, and the critics should have the responsibility of directing learned views as to a qualitative hierarchy, otherwise quality as a whole for a given genre gets degraded for lack of it, and thusly Girls doesn't deserve survival in light of Enlightened's potential demise

reply

The problem I have with Girls is that it is way too self-aware of itself. It also seems as if the actors are playing their parts while looking back at the audience saying, "look how brilliant we are". I like Girls, but if I had the choice Enlightened would be the one I would choose to stay. And another thing, Girls ratings aren't that great, but it was renewed after it picked up all those awards at the Golden Globes. If HBO does cancel Enlightened, I hope it picks up scads of awards just so HBO can eat crow. Remember Carnivale, Deadwood and Rome? Those programs were cancelled well before their time, which still leaves HBO bruised because of those bad decisions. Showtime is much better, because they seem to give their programs more of a chance.

reply

I really hope this gets a 3rd season although if it doesn't the season finale was a somewhat satisfying series finale. This show can't be THAT expensive with its relatively small cast plus HBO kept Treme on for 3 seasons with one more coming and who the *beep* watches that?

reply

Good point. I can't imagine Treme has ratings that are much better than "Enlightened". The second season finale was so well written, it could serve as the excellent finale to the series, yet it doesn't necessarily preclude a third season.

Who's High Pitch?

reply

Treme's ratings are a little better than Enlightened, but Treme has a much bigger cast and probably a bigger production budget.

reply

Enlightened is a great show; I hope HBO renews it. HBO keeps pushing the show "Girls" and I don't care to see it. I cannot understand why they don't do the same for Enlightened

reply

i think this is an epic that finished telling the story /andof its characters.

Amy's story is our story.

A story that has heart.

HBO doesn't know the gem that it has.

As humans, we care.

We've been lied to, we know it, but we have no voice.
We have no power to do anything about much of anything, although there's the illusion that we do.

So those like Damon and Janet maintain the illusion by continuing to believe in it and ridicule those like Amy that point it out to them. Because that makes them uncomfortable. As long as they still have theirs...

Any sees through the illusion, as we see through it.

People have lost jobs, homes and entire lives were torn apart because of the greedy and the indifferent.

People's voices have never been heard until the Occupy movements.

That's who Amy is to me. She's us.

She sees.

She's giving a voice and a heart to all of us.

Amy's not perfect. We're not perfect. That's what's so endearing about her. Beneath all the mistakes, there's a person who cares enough to put everything on the line, recklessly as she does.

Amy's fallible. We're fallible.

But it doesn't mean we deserve to be manipulated, lied to, muzzled, used and discarded like garbage thrown in the gutter when the greedy are through with us.

There is nothing out there being written that expresses these elements. I don't know if they intended to get at these themes, but they have.

Sometimes, when people like Amy get kicked out of the mainstream they begin to see life in a new way, with new eyes. They aren't even sure about what it is they are seeing, only that something isn't right.

Amy's on the outside looking in, and it gave her a new perspective, and she's seeing things for what they really are.

Amy is naive in many ways. Who hasn't been? She allowed herself to be used, and got angry, but I think she's on the right road.

I'd like to see more of her journey. I'd like them to show a bit more change in Amy after all that's happened to her, all she's seen. She's still going to be Amy, but that's what's so great about this story.

I hope that Amy sees that what she does in life, in finding a meaningful life doesn't have to be BIG, and that making a difference can be very humble and obscure difference, and yet be big. (And I'm not talking about Amy having a baby.)

Enlightened tells a story that needs to be told.

Nobody else is going to tell it in a way that people will take it in.

Enlightened validates and vindicates the fact that we see, through Amy's journey.

This show gets it.

So, bring it back.

You see what I see in the show: and what I would expect from the genius who wrote "Freaks and Geeks". "Enlightened" is that rarity: a work of art on telelvision. An excruciating, big-hearted show with clear vision, wit, and depth: of course it's not a big hit. But I'm so grateful for the two seasons we have had. They're keepers. Worth revisiting.

reply

Nicely put :)
I really wish they make another season, i loved (and cringed) every episode.
Laura Dern is fantastic.

reply

Deadwood and Rome were cancelled due to financial considerations, not poor ratings. They were both VERY expensive shows to produce.

reply

Just finished watching the second season and I definitely support a third season for the show. Laura Dern is simply amazing.

reply

I just read that they won't be picking up a third season. I am so gutted. There are so many rubbish shows out there that get renewed. Yet Enlightened which is viewing gold is canned. I have seen this happen to so many good shows. I can't really understand why people aren't glued to this show. It is so great on so many levels.

reply

This is easily one of the best shows I have ever watched. I was completely glued to it and heart-broken when they cancelled it.

The future is not set. You must be stronger than you imagine you can be.

reply

It's sad that it's not returning. I just finished all the episodes in the past couple days. This show it like a punch in the face that inspires you to punch evil yourself.

*Nyan Cat, LGBT Rainbow of Infinity!

reply

I agree - i think they only wanted to produce one more series and the story would be finished

reply

I have just heard it has been cancelled and I am completely gutted!! Why o why!!!! I was annoyed with HBO finishing In Treatment- now this!! I havent seen Season Two yet but loved the first! :/

reply

[deleted]

I just finished season 2 a few days ago, and I share your anguish. It wouldn't be so painful if the show wasn't so beautiful!

I would even except a 6 episode third season.

reply

Each to his own. But I think HBO knew what it didn't have here.

reply

I can't believe it.
For once we had a TV serie that was true, intelligent, deep... I can't believe they cancelled it ! Are they out of their mind !!? For how long are TV channels going to force-feed audiences with shallow and vulgar programmes ??? I'm so disappointed.

reply

I agree with you!
Over a year later, I still miss this show so much! I love Laura Dern.

reply

Bored To Death should not be mentioned in the same breath as Enlightened. Enlightened was the best show on TV since The Sopranos.

reply

I actually think The Wire is better, but it is simply the best series ever made. But other than that, Enlightened is the best.
