Helen's roof? Why all lumpy?

looks like there is all kinds of lumpy stuff on the roof - what is that about?

She had the type of roof that is made of clay tiles. A spanish type of roof. Very expensive, and they last a lifetime, with only a broken tile needing to be replaced. You only see those on pricey homes.

Is that what you mean?

It's a Mid-Century Modern Tropicool roof, similar to tar and gravel roof; both are fairly common on homes like hers (which is gorgeous). This article describes it well:

I'll second that - I had a Spanish tile roof in New Orleans so I knew that wasn't it but I've never seen a tar and gravel roof - I think that is it. Thanks
