audio/video tracks and dvd comparrisons
hi all,
i've noticed that the english voice-overs differs, wether it's the american history channel or other stations and my local danish dr2, that shows the series.
while i enjoy the american dubber, he often does many things for the history channel, dicovery and national geogrpahic - so it struck me in a good way; that my first viewing was with a different narrator.
i'd very much like to buy the series on dvd, if i could only get the version with the lesser known guy and i am not sure it's the one included in the french region 2 dvd ( however he sounds very british, so perhaps it would make sense ).
why i use so much time and energy, you wonder - you see I found differences in the actually telling too.
Example(s):
during the japanese attack on pearl harbour, the british narrated version states and exact number of casualties to the empire of japan. whereas the american history channel edition states that 'less then 100 japanese were killed'.
without being overly political here, i wonder if it's to cater to an american audience that must be angry and sad for their families' losses, that the vague estimation of dead soldiers on the axis side, was stated mildly, so it could be percieved as a heavier toll?
Furthermore, some visuals were omitted in the us history channel version, for example a japanese soldier looking at the blade of his sword - while the voice-over tells of beheadings of insubordinate prisoners.
However, what i did notice on the plus side was that a b-25 pilot crew shot down over japan, the european programme sounded as if all were sentenced to death. Whereas the american told that 5 were given life in prison and "only" 3 death, instead.
Also, so and so pilot survives an attack on a japanese carrier and goes on to become an airline pilot after the war - an american seaplane rescues him, we are (only) told in the US bit.
During this raid over Tokyo, the european angle doesn't tell the exact ammount of bombs dropped, stating 'only a few'. The american tells of 16 tonnes
In general there is a slight increase in images of japanese planes going down and people shot dead in the History channel's take.
One shot of an anzac (austrailian) soldier slips and falls, while we are told of malaria, leeches and "the japanese" as their many enemies, was cut short, to reveal a longer shot of imperial japanese infantrymen, making their way in the terrain, instead.
BUT, a plus to my knowledge, is that the american show, translates various texts written on walls, newpapers etc. througout; as well as pointers about what battle is taking place before our eyes - and nametagging famous general/leaders.
My notices are only based on episode 4 of 6, but I'm sure there must be similar notes in the entire series. I wont bore you, I think most of you get the jist already.
Little things can mean alot.
Total runnig time of the 4th episode:
------------------------------------
American ed. 47 minutes
European ed. 52 minutes
= And closing with that, your honours, I rest my case.
ANYWAYS, i'd very much like help with figuring out where to get either a dvd release or even a download, containing the british sounding voice-over.
Also if it's 2.0 or 5.1 sorround sound, the english track is mixed for. I would think the french region 2 disc only has 5.1 in french, to save disc-space ( as with most dvds).
I hope all of this could maybe also help you out, with finding the exact version you enjoyed the most..
any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
thank you for reading :)
