Extremenly well made

I just finished viewing the 6 part series on TV. I am so grateful that this series explains in detail, to all of us born after the War the horror of WWII.

With wonderfully preserved archival footage, restored and properly explained within its context it is easy to understand, the conflict and the suffering endured by all in those years (1939 -1945). I recommend it to all, however the DVD collection is as far as I know only available in Zone 2 PAL - It absolutely needs to be available in Zone 1 NTSC for North Americans to be able to buy and view it.

I just finished it too. Great pictures. But it was too centered on the western front and the perspective on things was definitely western and anti-soviet.

reply

Not sure if it was anti-Soviet as much as it was anti-Stalin. I'm OK with anti-Stalinism...

Never let your sense of morals prevent you from doing what is right.

reply

Yea well the soviets weren't exactly angels you know. Both Stalin and Hitler were mass murderers.

reply

Yes, but the context is important. Stalin was a murderous psychopath mostly to his own people, but you cannot downplay the role of the Soviets in the WWII, who lost 20 million souls and were almost the only ones who really stood up to Hitler on the European ground in 1941. (Moscow victory), 1942. (Stalingrad victory) and 1943. (Kursk victory), until Western front was finally opened in 1944.

I couldn't agree more. As a child born in the late 40s I learned very little as a student 50-60s. So much more detailed and chronologically organized information is available now and I really, REALLY enjoyed the redigitized footage with color. My father was in London during WWII but it so horrified him he would never talk about it. Ever! Thank you Smithsonian and Netflix!
