Episode 2 question.

At the beginning they speak of a school in the Ardennes but they never explained what exactly happened. Did the Nazis kill everyone? I can't remember the exact wording, but the implication was that footage was taken on the last day that school was in session. Is this true?

It seemed off to me and since they didn't come back to it, I'm unclear on the details. I know a lot about the politics of the war and the major battles, but the lesser known details are sometimes new to me. This was something I wasn't aware of. I'll even take that further and say that I didn't even know that villages existed in the Ardennes, but in hindsight it seems silly to believe otherwise. There are always villages in forests. I don't know why I took that for granted.

ETA:

I went back and listened to it. Here's what he says:

May 9th, 1940. a little French town, a town in the Ardennes Forest, not far from Germany, which is at war with France, but things have been quiet until now, so the children continue to line their clogs up neatly [camera shows school children and lining of clogs]. The school teacher says, "Today we're going to learn a nice song to bring peace back to us: 'Round, round, round go the puppets.'" This will be their last class. [off camera sound of bomb is heard and camera switches to a classroom covered in glass, broken things, etc.]

I've tried Googling the date, the forest, the song etc., but all I can find is absolutely nothing. Again, please if you know...
