Ok I must have missed something... (Massive Spoiler)

But why did Delta end up dying in the end? He was back with Elanor so he shouldn't have been at death's door should he? Or did I miss a really important explanation somewhere?

While he was no longer going to die due to separation from Elanor, he could still die through other means, he wasn't immortal.

And then.....AND THEN THE CAGE COMES DOWN!

Yes, you did miss a little something. Remember the scene at the beginning of Persephone when Sofia smothers Eleanor with the pillow? Doing that stopped Eleanor's heart just long enough to break her bond with Delta. Nothing could've saved him after that. Even if he didn't get exploded by those bombs at the end, he would've died either way.

Ahh thanks for explaining that, I misunderstood that part to be honest, I thought he just passed out then woke up again in captivity.

No problem :)

I didn't quite understand everything until my second playthrough.

To the OP, that why after Elenor revives him, every few minutes Delta goes through this "Spasm" while playing. You are actually dying. Elenor then tells you to hold on.

When you see Elenor get smoothered Delta's link is severed and he starts to die cause he is an alpha big daddy. Alphas would go insane, or laps into a coma and die when their little sister is killed or the bond is severed which is why they were a "failure" and the regular big daddies were not linked to one specific little sister.
