BBC shows edited version - unedited version 2 hrs. longer

Morven Christie has today tweeted that the BBC butchered the film as BBC2 only had 2 90 minute slots. She states that the "German" version is 2 hours longer. Anyone know where you can get hold of the "writer's" cut? Poor old Bleasdale - you spend 10 years out in the cold and then they chop your new work to pieces. Shame on the BEEB.

It was just aired (yesterday and today), unfortunately I recorded the second part without sound by accident. It was/is also 2x90 minutes.

Be happy that you missed the sound!

The German version is not identical to the British version. According to FAZ (newspaper), DEGETO did a special cut for the German market, according to the rule "Tell them what you gonna tell them, tell them, then tell them what you just told them." (http://www.faz.net/aktuell/feuilleton/medien/im-fernsehen-laconia-ein- grosser-film-wird-weichgezeichnet-11513285.html) We weren't trusted to "get" the British cut, but got lots of additional explanatory voiceover, and a rearrangement of scenes...

I recorded it, in HD even, but haven't sat down to watch it. Maybe I should just bin it and buy the BBC DVD.
Edited to add: On another movie site, I get a prediction of 3/10, based on my earlier ratings of various films. That pretty much decides it. I might watch it as background music while doing the ironing...

ITA with Mike. One of Britain's greatest writers having huge chunks removed from what was a great treat for the viewers. Eff the BBC.

apologies- if my name offends anyone.

Yes terrible BBC allowing this to get made!! seriously is this not a BBC co production.
If there is a longer version where is the evidence?
I liked this and one day will buy the dvd,but I have to ask why are you so sure the longer version is the better version?
I did not think there was much wrong with the version I watched on BBC,except maybe for the cliche Americans.

Err...if you haven't seen the longer edit, how do you know it isn't superior? It's being shown here in Australia on commercial TV as 2 x 2hr episodes (with commercials) this weekend.

By the way, you should like this-The Readers Digest version of 'War and Peace': A man called Pierre wanted to kill Napoleon but didn't...

The BBC version is 2 x 90 minutes _without_ commercials. How many adverts in the Australian 2-hour slots?! Probably the same version, or only marginally longer.
