THE 100 MONKEY STORY IS NOT TRUE.

It's an urban legend.

I started watching this movie with rapt attention, but as it continued I stopped buying it. This guy sounded more and more self deluded and delusional. The first half hour or 45 minutes is full of just terrifying stuff, but after that it really tapers off a lot. By the end, he was talking about things that were plainly untrue, like the '100 monkeys' theory.

I was very disappointed.

Um, he mentioned that it was a legend you know...

[ Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. ]

But then he says that he wants to be the 100th monkey. He's really unclear on if he actually believes this is true or not.

Hey clearly states "there is a legend of a fable , that..." . When he mentions he wants to be the 100th monkey, its just figure of speech, pretty obvious.

OMAR COMING!

reply

I think it's a pretty mixed metaphor.

He said this is his quest to FIND the 100th monkey.

It's not unclear at all.

reply

Okay. But given that the 100th monkey doesn't exist and the premise of the aphorism is logically flawed, it's still problematic.

Um...dude. It's a myth, which carries a sentiment of hope regarding the awakening of mankind. It did not seem unclear or mixed at all to me. Its just a lovely little idea which gets a message across :-S

If he's trying to say he wants to be a whistle blower, there are better ways of saying it...you know, like saying "whistle blower". By bringing in a variation of the 100 monkeys myth (and adding in stuff about radiation, which I never recall hearing before) he obfuscates his point.

You have to stop getting hung up on a metaphor that's not based in reality. You're supposed to see the point, not the reality of it. Most famous and/or well known metaphors are purely fictional, made up to create a point that you will see more clearly than if you were to dig up a true story that matched it, but was considerably more complicated

first, he said its a legend.

And secondly, the man does not think that he is the 100th monkey. He clearly stated that he is in a search of the 100th monkey, not that he is the 100th monkey.

I know it was a metaphor. My point was that he is quite delusional in his statements. I haven't seen the movie in ages, so I can't remember the exact details, but he wanted to be the "one to wake everyone up" but all messianic stories are metaphors (if not designed as lies), so not only are his theories gonzo, his personal goal isn't realistic either.

straighttovideo,

1. He is not "trying" to be a whistle-blower. He IS a whistle-blower and is best known for informing the American public about CIA drug smuggling.

2. The "quest for the 100th monkey" is based on a story (he does not call it a factual account), and means that he is hoping to inspire enough people to be more informed and aware of what's going on around them that eventually they reach a critical mass (this would be represented by the point at which the 100th monkey learns to wash the coconuts) and start a revolution of thought in which people take charge of their destinies and work to change the world for the better. Same metaphor applies to the lifeboat builder on the Titanic.

3. Which messianic stories? He specifically states that he is not a messiah, just somebody who has spent the past 30 years working to uncover the truth and doing his best to alert people to said truth.

Which 100 monkey story are you talking?

reply

Story about a big group of monkeys on a deserted island, in which humans teach a couple of monkeys to first clean the coconuts they were eating. After some monkeys cleaned it, more began to clean the coconuts. When there were 100 monkeys cleaning the coconuts, the whole group suddenly started cleaning them before eating.

...If I remember correctly :P

op needs to watch the movie again.
he didnt claim to be a messiah obviously if you were paying attention.

The story of the 100th monkey is that he's on a quest, meaning that he'll keep telling his story until the last cynic believes in whats he saying so that rest of the population could follow. There will be more cynics and people that ridicule him for asserting everything he just said. But sometimes what's even what he says won't get the whole attention of the people to instantanteously believe him, yet he must get at least the 100 monkeys, so that the rest of the 100,000 population can believe him. You know what pissed me off about how you tried to rebuke him? You came with your "logically flawed" approach of condescending on this mans whole life view. There was no respect in your tone. We'll see who's running at the end of the line...

reply

The OP seems to be the only one that didn't get the point of the metaphor.

reply

I'm pretty sure he used the story metaphorically.
