Where's the logic?

I haven't watched this movie. Probably won't, ever. But how does this make sense? Plot summary according to Netflix goes as such;

"Still reeling from his son's tragic death, Dr. Drew Carter attempts to assuage his family's grief by adopting a terminally ill foster child."

I just don't get the reasoning behind this. He's grieving over the loss of his son, yet, he adopts a kid who's going to die soon? Call me crazy, but I don't think the best way to cope with grief over the loss of a loved one, is to fall in love with a replacement who is guaranteed to kick the bucket sooner rather than later. Maybe I'm just being an insensitive prick, but if anybody wants to clue me in, that'd be great.

Everything I ever needed to know, I learned from killing smart people and eating their brains.

That's why I came here too...

It seems odd to me too because I don't think I could ever do it. But it's more about a terminally ill child needing a family than it is about the father wanting to adopt a terminally ill child. Assuage is the key word. He sees adopting a terminally ill child as the only thing fit to trump the pain of losing his son. Assuage basically means to replace pain or lessen the severity of grief... Kind of odd.

And Netflix didn't do so well in the summary, according to the film's tagline and IMDb's info.

It might seem an odd choice but the man was wanting to help the young boy in the small amount of time he had left. Not many people could handle a heart- breaking situation like that, especially after losing one of their own children.
