How did Michael know about the moving kitchen counter?

After Judy Greer brings her daughter down to the basement, Michael is at the top of the living room stairs and didn't see the kitchen counter moving or anything. Then, he goes into the kitchen and somehow just knows to start fiddling with it trying to rip it off the hinges?

HE WAS LOCKED UP FOR A LONG TIME....HE WATCHED A LOT OF HOME RENOVATION SHOWS.

I always assumed he heard them below him and was able to figure it out. The scene seemed to suggest that from the way he was tilting his head listening and looking down.

At one point Laurie shoots at Michael while still in the basement. She shoots up into the floor boards basically giving herself away
