I personally think it's great, but -

the final product that was released really feels like a typical unrated cut with completely unnecessary scenes added that stick out like a sore thumb and tarnish the movie (like that scene with Allyson's dad being an overtly creepy perverted redneck, Cameron suddenly transforming into a childish asshole; that was just so weird and out of left field, the cop going on that long nonsensical litany about banh mi sandwiches, etc. But other than that I think it actually does a good job picking up the story 40 years after the original in a logical/plausible way).

Some of the deleted scenes should've been left in - there's one that explains Cameron's disappearance from the film and leaves his character less of an a-hole (he apologies to Allyson and mouths off at a cop who then arrests him).

More scenes of the teen characters as well, which should've been left in over that bizarre sandwich conversation between the cops.

Just checked out those deleted scenes, and while that one with Cameron does add context I think that whole thing (and the scenes between Allyson and Oscar relating to it) and the other scenes I mentioned above all would have been better off as deleted scenes on the blu ray instead of in the movie.
