Will be a direct sequel to the original

The reports/rumors that this upcoming Halloween will ignore all the movies in the series except the first two are false. According to Carpenter this one is only going to acknowledge the original classic...

Michael and Laurie might not even be related anymore. Not sure how to feel about this, but considering Carpenter originally didn’t intend to make Laurie & Michael siblings, it’ll be interesting to see a completely different (what might’ve been) take on the series. Also, Carpenter is apparently set to score the new film.

Personally, I've only ever accepted the first as true canon. I always thought the idea of them being related was stupid. But I doubt this movie is going to be any good.

I didn't care for this when they did this with H20,ignoring parts 4,5,6 frankly I think 4 was a superior film to that one. I am less inclined to be ok with this. So this is a significant strike against this new film for me. I may still watch it but all the interest has been sucked out of it for me.

I think it is great news but the film might not take advantage of its own genius. I liked parts 2,4,5 and even a little bit of 6 but the one thing I always thought was silly was having them be related. It would work fine with another maniac but the creepy factor of the first film was how random Michael was. Sequels always explain too much, imagine if Kubrick's Shining had sequels. They'd explain every little aspect about the ghosts and their motives, and there'd no longer be any mystery or confusion in the original film.

I do very much like the idea that the original Halloween happened and Myers disappeared for 40 years and now is randomly coming back. If they do not explain too much about where he has been or why he is returning/how, this could be a great film. Laurie would be a good substitute for Loomis this time around as well.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they delve deeper into Michael’s backstory yet again, and to be honest I’ll be fine with it providing that the movie can still live up to the original. But that said, I agree with you completely.

Unless a more “practical” and effective backstory is given, keeping the mystery of who Michael is and what his motivations are can be the best thing that could happen to this movie and the franchise.

They probably will, it is a sequel and that is how they kill time in horror sequels. Loomis told us everything we needed to know about Michael and any new information just humanizes him, which makes him less scary. If I were to write a sequel to the original Halloween I would focus on Laurie and a new group who she sees going towards the same fate as her original group went. I'm more interested in the fate element of Halloween than the object which brings it to Laurie or someone else.

This also opens the possibility that Michael is not supernaturally immortal anymore. He may have been shot several times in the original but surviving that much could happen in real life. It wasn't until H2 that we learn that he is basically unkillable and Strode's brother.
