Quick, trashy, fun, and short.

Which also is a good summation for Nick Cage's career now a days. Though I do love the man for his spectacularly cheesy B movies.

So very true. Except for a few instances every now and then such as this movie, "The Bad Lieutenant", and "Kick Ass", his career is trashy now a days. His performance here was very appropriate though. As a neo-grindhouse flick, I think it's great, and succeeds for what it's trying to do. Unlike movies like "Death Proof", "Machete", "Hobo With a Shotgun", or "Piranha 3DD" which have all missed their mark tremendously.

The difference with Cage's other recent work is that they are all unintentionally trashy.

How did Hobo with a Shotgun miss it's mark? That movie was pure grindhouse awesomenes.

For me, it seemed like they originally intended to make a grindhouse movie. But as it progressed, it felt like what they really wanted to do was make a Troma film. And with the exception of possibly the first "Toxic Avenger", I've never liked anything by Troma. It might be a bit of a biased assessment, but I understand the appeal of "Hobo with a Shotgun". "Rubber" is another great neo-grindhouse picture up there with "Drive Angry".

This is Death Proof in reverse. All the cool stuff happens in the beginning, the yawn part is the second half.

EGGzactly. One of the most underrated flicks of our lifetime. The sub-room-temperature IQ crowd doesn't get "Grindhouse Cinema" This is an "art-form" and Nick was born for this stuff...

Probably stating the obvious here, but Death Proof wanted to be Vanishing Point with a revenge angle.

It wasn't supposed to be an over-the-top exploitation film, it was pulpy, but not vulgar.

Also, Kurt Russell > Nicholas Cage any day. Frankly, Kurt would have nailed this role. Would be a lot more convincing--despite his age--as an escapee from Hell on a rampage to save his grand-daughter from a satanic cult than Cage with a bad dye job.

That is so not what Deathproof was trying to be, or should have been for that matter. You clearly have absolutely no understanding of the kind of film Quentin Tarantino was trying to make. In fact, you have it pretty much 100% backwards. And Kurt Russel is a vastly superior actor. There was a point in Cage's career where he was a great actor, but his career went down the toilet and so has his acting skills. Death Poof with Cage would have been vastly inferior.

Those old grindhouse b movies were more like death proof. They tended to have long talky stretches with maybe 2-3 action scenes. They didn't have the budget for more.
