Religious Undertones

Am I the only one who thinks that the main char is being represented as a sort of Jesus?

What do you think was the underlying message from the director representing the main protagonist as JC?

There's also a part in the movie where he gets a delivery from a dude who's wearing a "Where is He" T-shirt (it's a superman shirt but it could mean several things)

curious about responses, there's no right or wrong, just thought I'd see what others felt/thought

What makes you think that Kim represents Jesus? Espessially in a country that (allthough having a large population of Christians) is historically been mostly Buddhist?

Yes, there are Christians in South Korea, as well as Buddhists and other religions.

I thought that "Where is He" was a reference to aliens (Superman is an alien, so that makes sense). There isn't a clear religious message (to me, at least) but references to aliens pop up several times; the agoraphobic lady thinks of the main character as an alien.

I sort of thought that the main character looked a little like Jesus (long hair and beard plus headband), but that could simply be because he didn't have easy access to scissors and a razor.

He is taken down by the cops, which also made me briefly think of Christ and the Romans. But he isn't put on trial and isn't punished; he's just abandoned in a park, permitted to start his old life again. Though I also think that it's a rebirth/resurrection (a theme in several religions); coming back into the old world with a clean slate and hope (the lady).

the only religious moment i saw was a Buddhist one. when he was trying to hang himself and then needed to take a crap, and while squatted over he discovered those flowers with the sweetest tasting nectar hed ever had. which was like that Buddhist story about the man hanging off a cliff between two tigers, one above and one below, and while facing certain death he found the sweetest strawberry hed ever eaten growing there. one of those moments that makes you re-evaluate your life and remember that every single moment is precious.

anyone who lets their hair and beard grow wild is eventually going to look like the typical representation of Jesus(which isnt a historically accurate representation at all). Even Tom Hanks in that other movie looked like him too. Im not sure if it means anything.

Yeah,if anything he looked to be in a meditative state after the attempts for him to get back failed. He was quiet, inward oriented and more settled which has everything to do with the East's concept of being in meditation.

Not at all. He has longer hair and a beard, similar to traditional christian imaging of him. Other than that, I never got that feeling.

I'm sure a few people think the same thing. Though really same people probably think the same thing of any movie.

So every bum is a representation of Jesus??? Really?

...yeah, I see it! Reading the Bible makes people dumb...

reply

Yes, you're the only person that got that.

Also, why is there one of these posts on practically every movie board? Not every movie has religious subtexts.

"Maybe there is a beast... Maybe it's only us."

When his beard grew in and they showed his hair all straggly, I immediately thought "korean jesus!" But nothing else in the story made me think of the jesus story.
