apparently, theyre making hollywood remake

too bad, its one of my favorite movies

Idiots. This movie has nothing in common with Cast Away, jeez.

But are they seriously making a remake? NOOOO.

reply

Why is this a bad thing? You don't have to watch it, but people like me will surely enjoy a remake in a language we can actually understand.

reply

Ever heard of subtitles?

reply

Nah, Americans are scared of subtitles.

reply

I was hoping that this was just a silly rumor but I googled it and it looks like it is confirmed, unfortunately.

The guy who directed Mean Girls & Freaky Friday is directing the remake. I don't know what to think. :-/ I wonder who will be cast as the two lead characters.

Not getting my hopes up too high for this one. After all, all of the k-movies that have been remade for American audiences have been terrible so far. :-(

But Iam curious about how they will deal with the hikikomori subject. I don't think I have ever seen a U.S. movie that deals with it directly.

reply

"The guy who directed Mean Girls & Freaky Friday is directing the remake". and with this ... i will give up even to try and see it.

reply

This is another HUGE hollywood mistake

reply

Agreed !

reply

How does a Hollywood remake keep you from continuing to enjoy the Korean version?

reply

it doesnt, but it does get in the way of more people seeing and enjoying the Korean version with you.

if the remake is bad, it will taint the original so that people wont take it seriously. and if its good, then people will claim it is better because they will not bother watching the original because it is in a foreign language.

reply

I don't think that a bad remake has any bearing on the original. They're separate entities. In my experience, most people tend to write remakes off as far worse than the original regardless of whether they've seen it or not.

I always assumed the majority of people nowadays understood that Hollywood remakes are often inferior to the original.

reply

majority of people or majority of imdbers?

he is right , remakes do taint the original

reply

I don't think a Hollywood remake would prevent any Americans from watching the Korean original. As great as it is, and it is one of my top 10 favorite movies, there aren't many Americans watching it now.

Why can't we Americans just read subtitles??? It's really not that hard!

There is no need to remake any movie. If its based off of a book or comic book like Spiderman or Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, etc. then its OK, but this movie is perfect. PERFECT. They can only ruin it.

reply

A lot is lost in the subtitles. It is very different to watch a movie in a language you understand.

reply

How is it different? What do you lose? You still have the volume on and can hear changes in their voices so you don't lose anything. It's not a matter of what's lost so much as the fact that most Americans are too stupid and too lazy to read subtitles. A good story, good acting, good audio, and good cinematography is independent of what language it is in.

It seems as if Hollywood loves to remake Asian movies because they don't think Asian movies will get any viewers. When was the last time they actually released an Asian movie in theaters short of fine arts theaters? Never. They just remake them into crap.
Unfortunately it's not just Asian movies either. REC is one of the best horror movies ever and they remade it to Quarantine which was just so so. Sadly people won't ever see REC but instead are subjected to Quarantine.

the fact that most Americans are too stupid and too lazy to read subtitles.
It's got nothing to do with being American and everything to do with being Human. Hollywood movies get localized dubs in all major foreign markets, it is only the small markets which aren't profitable enough to afford a dub which are forced to watch with subtitles. The only reason those markets don't get outright remakes is because their film industries can't support a significant number of remakes. They still get a handful though. Like "A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop," "The Beat That My Heart Skipped," and "Connected(2008)."

Sadly people won't ever see REC but instead are subjected to Quarantine.
The group of people who would watch [REC] but went to see Quarantine instead is so small that they might as well not exist. Most foreign films don't even get US releases, but when they are remade, the original usualy gets a US release on DVD. Like [REC] which got an R1 DVD release after Quarantine hit theaters. That means a hollywood remake actually improve the chances that americans will see the original.

reply

I think it is kind of like Big Man Japan, in that it can't really be remade. Outside of your standard shot for shot remake. I mean it seems pretty unique to its country. Relatable, but just because everything is really. We are all human. We are all connected and such. However I don't see how they could transfer the story over to the U.S. and make it unique enough or even slightly different enough to warrant a remake. Not to mention it doesn't really have that mainstream an appeal.

So yeah, really doubt they are ever going to remake this.

Snap, Crackle...CALL AN AMBULANCE!

reply

Shut up. Remakes don't taint the original, they in fact promote it so more people see it. Do you think the average person would know about this film if it wasn't for them hearing that the new remake is based off of it? It brings more attention to this film even existing and the possibility of more people ending up checking it out. And let's face it, that's what you hypocritical hipsters really hate... your special little baby will get the attention you claim it deserves, but now it won't be so special anymore because everyone else will like it too. Film nerds are hilarious egotards.

reply

ahhh i feel as if its most likely gonna fail like all these other american remakes of Korean movies, I wonder what they are gonna change the food item too cause they cant do black bean noodles

reply

a foregone conclusion a remake will suck.
it will probably be like Adam Sandler and Mena Suvari with Bill Murray as the
apartment building security guard......
and he'll try and "grow" mac & cheese or some such nonsense.
the delivery guy will still be Asian though.
