Didn't this movie come out like 30 years ago?

And wasn't it called "Harold and Maude"? I shouldn't judge this film before I see it, but the story and characters are eerily similair to that film with the exception of the female leads age.

Harold faked suicide several times. Doesn't appear that Enoch does.
Maude was not terminally ill. Anabelle is.
Obviously their ages, which you did already state.

Doesn't appear to be a remake at all. Maybe similar in regards to the boy enjoying funerals, but that's about it.

Shawn: The black guy's my partner!
Jules: They're both black

Actually, Maude had the equivalent of a terminal disease. She was determined to die on her 80th birthday. Without giving the story away, something similar happens in Restless.

So you've got a guy obsessed with death who falls in love with a terminally ill girl. By the end she teaches him to love life, just as she herself passes away.

Yup, a total ripoff. Only Maude's age was changed. And oh yeah, they added a dopey ghost.

Must be nice to befriend Ron Howard's daughter in film school. Get a leg up like that, nobody cares whether your ideas are original or not.

reply

Oooooh I just said this in another thread! I'm so glad that people think the same

reply

Harold and Maude, Will Farrell in Wedding Crashers, Restless... they're all the same thing basically.

reply

I thought the exact same thing! I feel like someone saw "Harold and Maude" and thought, "I can do this better." So they wrote this. I shouldn't judge it either but... I'm not happy about it....

just sayin.

reply

That's weird, I just thought the exact same thing, and I haven't even seen Harold and Maude, just heard about it from a friend...well I guess there are only so many plot ideas in the world! The trailer doesn't look too bad at least.

"Do you even know what a magnate is?"
"Sure, a thing that eats cheese."

reply

I don't think that they thought they could make it "better" just more commercially viable. I know that a lot of people had an issue with Maude's age and that if any of my mates actually watched it they would think that it was disgusting. So I think these people have seen the potential and have "dumbed it down" for a wider audience.

Well, since there are only about 7 stories in all of mankind, said in different ways, there are few, if any, original ideas, by anyone, at any time. The fact that they keep making more of us, to see it all over again is probably the reason why. You are not original, either, nor are any of us.

also, since Gus van Sant didn't write this, he is probably not a HACK. And, very, very few of us get anywhere in our careers without knowing "someone in the biz." Otherwise, why bother with any social networking, let alone LinkedIn. Hmmm?

reply

Seriously. I was afraid of it as soon as I read the description, looks like a complete rip off. :(

"Harold and Maude" was cool. No one needed to remake it! "Harold and Maude" was quirky and fun, and judging from the trailer, "Restless" film looks formulaic and overdone.

"So....'MANOS' the hands of fate!"

reply

I taught the same thing when I read the plot "HAROLD AND MAUDE"
I'm glad too I found that am not the only one.

reply

Absolutely

Harold's obsession with death and attending funerals = male protagonist
Maude has to die during the movie = terminally ill female protagonist

Ofcourse I don't expect Gus to come anywhere near Hal Ashby's direction or get somebody to match Cat Steven's soundtrack.

reply

I don't know. I've seen Harold and Maude several times and I loved it. But I didn't get that these two movies were even remotely the same by watching the trailer. Of course it's impossible to even compare the two until you watch the movie itself.

reply

Yeah, you might want to see the movie before you judge it because you never know.

reply

That's what I was thinking ...

But it did happen

reply

lol when i opened the imdb web and read the tagline 'terminally ill teenage girl falls for boy that likes to attend funerals'. I thought the EXACT same thing, but if you watch the trailer, they're not. :o

reply

Wow I thought the exact same thing(like what everyone has said already) and I haven't even watched that show and only heard of it like once as I recall thats funny how many people seem to have thought that right after reading that summary and seeing the title of this topic

I'll be back
