I'm sure the specifics are very different.

But the fact that the basic premise smacks so heavily of Harold & Maude makes me wonder why the writer didn't just make some simple alterations to divorce it from that obvious comparison. Unless he either wanted to invite the comparison (which is doubtful) or actually wasn't familiar with Harold & Maude (also doubtful), I just don't know why someone would do that.
