confusing and tedious

It was often difficult determining which character was doing what. The editing promoted confusion of action and of the characters. Also often the same character would appear so transformed as to confuse the viewer as to which one it was. It was somewhat preachy and the story line often flagged, as well as being rather unrealistic.

Yeah, it does start out convoluted and confusing with too many characters -- too many of them unlikable -- and not enough focus on any one of them, but then around the midway point I got it. I got what the director/writer was doing and my initial irritation morphed into respect. It's a very unique film and the quality actors pull of the difficult material, particularly the black guy's monumentally challenging role. That plus the cinematography, editing, poignant script and choice songs on the soundtrack worked together to produce a unique and moving movie with gems to mine on future viewings.

I encourage you to give it another try some time.
