The film doesn't explain. In one scene she is saying she's going to the wedding and the next scene (with her) she is lifeless in a chair with the bloody nose you describe.
"He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator."
He told her "Let me get on you one last time before you go." Maybe he smothered her to death to keep her from leaving. Movie doesn't explain, just my opinion.
