Probly cuz after a death the deceases family comes out of the woodwork with their greedy hands wanting what they think they are owed.

I understood it was because there was some boys hanging around and women worried they would steal all valuable.

This is part of the 'neighborhood watch' program started 4 decades ago here in the States and having gotten similar programs in other countries. Part of it is to engrave your important belongings and to take pictures or log them. Then when stolen in burglaries, when 'fenced' buyers (in places like swap meets and pawn shops) can see the 'true' owner and contact them.

Thanks a lot!

If I understand correctly, it's implied (although perhaps not explicitly stated) that the engraving activity and the meeting were planned _before_ the death ...that they're not in any way a response to the death.

That would make sense. The scene not only shows us one more example of the wife not coping very well yet, but also another view of the (overly uptight?) character of the neighbor.
