i find the final (series and episode) very odd

what I mean by this is the way the writers chose to end the show.

Firstly series 4 seems to the biggest of the each series as its the first set outside of the flat, has more characters, more set pieces and it all take place in one day, so each episode has to focus on a specific period of the day which shows just how much thought went into the episodes and structure of the big final to end the show.

so taking this in mind why did they only make 5 episodes as opposed to the usual 6? because this series really felt like there was an episode missing to tie everything up. a lot of things felt unresolved especially to do with Paul and Laura. are we supposed to believe that's it for them, the two are going to begrudgingly stay together, that Paul does not get to be with the man he loves and is going to essentially live in misery from now on.

where was Laura's comeuppance for everything she has done? I personally thought she would get publically outted for her behaviour towards everyone and shown up in front of her family and friends with Pauls gay revelations to the guest but we got no big bang or resolution. the same with Lee and Becky's dad's treatment of Steve there was no moment when Steve got his own back on them or stood up to them it just fizzled into nothing, sure shelly dealt with Becky's dad but that was because of her own problems with him. why were none of these things addressed or given a satisfying conclusion.

It also seems very odd to end this show after only 4 series especially when there is Becky and Steve's wedding and the two are having a baby. These two things alone would provide lots of drama, comedy and story to fill out at least another year or two, add to that what could be done with the Paul and Laura saga I don't get why the show ended on an odd number of episodes after 4 series that obviously could have continued .

Just watched the last series today, 5 episodes i can't explain but i assume they maybe wanted to leave it open ended for a feature length episode or a new series that they never got

Did they get cancelled or was it always planned that it would end like this? The main problem i have is that once Steve and Becky have a kid then they need to change or it would be really like shameless, These 2 on benefits bringing up a kid doesn't sound too fun for the type of show it was. Maybe they could have ended it with the birth or something though
