Why and how do people put up with Laura?

The way she spoke to Becky in the past episode was horrible, I would've punched her if that was me (and if I was a girl)

She treats everyone like crap, especially her "friend" Shelley, someone should just tell her to go *beep* herself.

I'm the hero IMDb deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

In real life some (most) of the people around her wouldn't put up with her of course, but this is a television show -- as saminsin has called it accurately a "black comedy about abusive relationships".

At this point in the 3rd series I would add the word "relentlessly" to that, so it's a "relentlessly black comedy about relentlessly abusive relationships", as I don't think they are going to write it any differently until perhaps the end of the show.

How is it about abusive relationships? I agree that the Laura-Paul relationship is pretty messed up but there are no others.

Beckys Dad is very abusive in his relationships (wife), or in his approach to woman (Shelly).

Lauras abusive relationship with her friends and family (except with her Dad, where she clearly picks it from).

Lees approach to Becky is verging on abusive.

Dan is abused by almost everyone.

Abusives relationships dont have to be between two people dating/Married.

I think about that a lot, but I just can say that people feel sorry for her, because she's so painfully stupid that I guess the others have to treat her like a f*ed up kid who just needs atention. The show is a lot of things, but not unrealistic. Becky is one of the most patient and incredibly nice creatures on Earth, so I guess people try to see her upset, but even Laura can get her really upset...

Shelley stood up to her once but Laura just ignored it.

The show is a very clever documentary into the world of the ignorant masses. If you can relate to Steve/Becky, then you understand the concept. The writer embellishes the ignorant characters (I. E. Makes them more horrible) for effect, and it certainly pays off!

The thing is, as awful a person as she is, and as much as she seems to get by
with, she always ends up getting the shaft in just about any situation. That's
what people like to see, even if it's usually more subtle in how she gets hers.

For example, finding out your husband is gay just before taking your vows.
How more rotten can something be that happens to her?

I don't think Laura is as stupid as she makes herself out to be. She is extremely unhappy and jealous of how happy Becky is with Steve knowing full well Paul cheats on her.

She's so mentally unhinged and depressed the only level of control of her life is to abuse others. 2 really poignant scenes come to mind and that's when she is abusing Shelley when drunk in the flat and Shelley just walks out, Laura almost suppresses a sob and looks devastated with herself, she knows she is being despicable. Then again at the wedding when she is being vile to Becky and Becky just responds with " You know I love you don't you?" and again Laura breaks down. She is utterly miserable and I think she goes out of her way to be as disgusting and nasty as possible to prove that her life really isn't pathetic.

"What you don't like rice? Tell me Michael, how can a billion Chinese people be wrong?"

reply

No idea. She's an awful *beep* She should be punched in the face by every character every episode.
