What Happened to Murtagh in the end?

A couple of questions.

Was he killed by Bjorn or did he just flee? What are Tamara and the other two characters waiting athe the end of the film?

reply

He got killed. By the dude's brother. With a sledgehammer.

What I wanna know is what happened with the law?? Why wasn't Maytag locked up? (Maybe he was out on bail. Or wasn't charged with serious crimes.) I thought they were going to show a big front page news headline when they showed all the newspapers being thrown at doors, but no. I would've liked to known the repercussions of everyone's actions, in real life. Instead it seemed like "what happens at LARP camp, STAYS at LARP camp. Even dead bodies."

I think that a scene with a couple of cop cars outside of the LARP would have been a good idea. Otherwise I just assumed that Murtagh got a good lawyer that got him off. It would be hard to prove that the murder was his fault since Lyn died at the end of the movie and couldn't testify.

reply

Yeah, just something to hint at the law's involvement, or a news item, or something. Doesn't necessarily have to be an epilogue.

Agreed. A minor flaw in what is an otherwise excellent film.

With all of the witness testimony the truth would have come out. Of course there were instigators, but in the end, the guy who killed Eric was not Murtagh.

They don't really show, but it looked like a lot of real violence took place there at the end, so we don't really know how many people were seriously injured or even killed. They alluded to some possible sexual crimes as well (Murtagh's gang attacking the elves) but thankfully don't go into much detail. From the standpoint of the law, Murtagh's part was small.

It was obvious to me that Murtagh was remorseful at the end. Still, I understood Eric's brother's vengence.

I felt this film was really good at illustrating that nothing is cut and dry. Villains and heros - it isn't black and white, there are shades of grey.

They show him burn his wallet in the fire before the rampaging begins. I think that since everyone stayed in character for the most part, no one knew his real name. So when the police questioned the witnesses they had know way of telling the cops who Murtagh really was.

I knew as soon as he cut off his bracelet with real knife and burned his wallet, sh*t was about to go down.

reply

They did use their own names though, didn't they?
Erik, Bjorn, Bernie we know for sure uses their own names.
Greg I assume is his real name as well. I see nothing that indicates that everyone uses fake names.

reply

He didn't kill anyone. I'm admittedly not familiar with Canadian law, but he was only guilty of not stopping others from committing murders, which doesn't seem like something you can put someone in prison for.

Great ending. It elevated the movie from "pretty good" to something that I will remember for a long time.

reply

Bjorn says at the end "as for the deceitful one, though he escaped fooling me with his lies, he could not fool Almighty Thor."
I am guessing he some how got away with it as he didn't actually do any killing or attacks on people he got the others to do it for him.

Like the rest of the movie, it gets the viewer thinking there at the end. I would think that since it showed him sitting, presumably, at home than there was no issue with authorities. After thinking about it, he never actually said “let’s go on a rampage and kill” even without Lynn’s testimony, so it would be difficult to make any kind of charge stick. The only thing I would have wanted clarified was what happened to the one instigator that Bjorn’s crew dogpiled at the end. The one that actually killed Erik.
This concept of blurring reality with fiction, specifically LARPing, has been done before, but never so well. The filmmakers do a wonderful job of treating the material seriously. The movie was smart, well shot, and just stunning. I can’t wait to see what the director does next.

Maybe they changed it in the version that is currently on Netflix, but the brother kills him at the end with a real sledgehammer while he is at home getting a cup of coffee.
