Feel cheated...

As the title says... I kinda feel cheated with this show.
It's like going to my favorite coffee shop, where I go everyday for the last 3 years, and all of a sudden, Im being handed tomato juice, instead of coffee, with no warning. Im not saying tomato juice is bad...all Im saying I went there for coffee.

I like Louis CK, he's one of my favorite COMEDIANS hands down. But this is not comedy anymore. Like others here have said, I think I laughed maybe 2 or 3 times during the entire season. I came here expecting comedy...weird, dark, twisted comedy for sure...but still 100% pure comedy. What I got instead is some artsy drama episodes. Im sorry, but Im just not interested in that.

If I wanted weird *beep* up drama, I would watch a Woody Allen movie. And speaking of Woody Allen..might he be the reason for this sudden style change? The Blue Jasmine experience might have changed LCK's optics on entertainment / television.
He is trying too hard to be something he is not. He should stick to comedy and stand up imo.

Yeah, Louis is now like a really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really shallow Woody Allen wannabe.

couldn't agree more.
There are some interesting scenes, the cinematography is decent, but the storyline / screenplay doesn't deserve a tvshow. It's just not interesting enough.

It could be just as well, a YouTube series made by an amateur.

If I had to find the highlights of this season, it would be the scene where the hungarian lady is playing the violin with Louis's daughter, and also the tickling/punching episode was fairly funny. The rest, especially the scale episodes I found extremely boring. The kid playing the young Louie was especially annoying. (the chemistry teacher and Jeremy Renner although did a really nice job).

Episode 13 and 14 have a lot of comedy..
the first episode this season i laughed a bunch of times.

I've rolled with him everywhere on this show because I know his personal mantra for conceiving his ideas is a note to himself that says "This can be anything you want." So, there you go. It all works within that mantra. Sorry if you don't like it. But he might surprise you and us all with more funny episodes later.

I understand why some feel cheated, but i don't. Great show!

I agree. I felt like this was the best season - poignant, beautiful, honest. I loved it before (LOVED) and love it just as much now.

Actually you are trying too hard to make him something he's not. Do you hear yourself? How narcissistic. Louie is doing exactly what he wants to do. It is physically sickening the extent to which people in this world feel so entitled. Gimme a break. People grow, evolve and change. It's when you see the ones around you changing and growing while you stay stagnant that it becomes an issue. Grow up, the world does not and will never revolve around you, the rest of the world will be here when and if you ever decide to get your head out of your own ass.

He's not trying to be anything.
He is just himself
I found this season to be very funny, not all episodes, but i laughed a lot, and i appreciate the life lessons as much as the comedy.
The in the woods eppys are .. well i can't even describe how good they are, on so many different levels. So are almost all of them.
So many memorable characters, dialogues, guests, storylines, all beautifully shot and edited.
Typical louie if you ask me
Season 4 for me hit it off, might even be my favorite.
Just because the season didnt meet your expectations doesnt mean its a dramma all of a sudden. Rewatch it and hope you get to see all the layers instead of waiting for the big stupid laugh to be served to you. Find the big hidden laugh by combining all those layers and undertones together
I've already said too much. Good luck

Can you please tell me what actual life lesson you learned from Louie this season?
Not to smoke pot? Not to steal scales and sell them to drug dealers? Please give me a couple of examples of life lessons, maybe Ive missed them.

Be open to change & risk. Don't screw around with the feelings of people who love you. Find the beauty in unusual places & people. Learn from your mistakes. Try to understand your kids instead of just lecturing them. Need more than these?

So Did the Fat Lady is one of the most poignant pieces of fiction ever made. Actually, the whole season is incredible. I'm glad Louie went in that direction.

reply

It's still very much a comedy at its heart, it's just not slapstick or sitcom humour. It's finding the funny in the every day stuff. In real life.
This season did go further than previous into the drama side of things but it's not a surprise. The show has continually got deeper and more risky as the seasons progressed. It's not exactly unexpected.

Totally aware and warned the show was going to be less laugh-filled and more experimental this season. Totally happy about that, Louis has done that successfully previously. Halfway through the season I was still on board, but with doubts creeping in as each episode failed to really entertain or pay off. After the looooong Elevator storyline, flashback story and Pamela finale.... totally lost me. Not because it wasn't funny, not because I'd rather watch Big Bang Theory, but because it seemed to be so focused on being oblique or ambiguous it failed to communicate anything much. And because the episodes themselves were just a slog to get through. The things people claim were funny - yet not laugh out loud funny, but they apparently still loved them - the red button saying the N word, Pamela saying 'you can't even rape well,' young Louie asking about farts... none of this appealed at all. Glad the season is over, shame Louis has gone on this 'unfunny, uninteresting' direction, hope he is not as blindly loyal to himself as others seem to be to him....

reply

It wasn't young Louie but one of his classmates who kept asking about farts in science class. Louie was just the guinea pig for the first experiment.

It's a damn shame because the show had so much promise. Was great until this season.

It's fantastic if you're into the Drama but that's not why I started watching. I enjoy some drama but only when it's worthwhile.

Instead of saying people like us are wrong how about a little bit of sympathy? Those that are enjoying it more than ever - you're LUCKY, I'm jealous of you.

I don't feel entitled, Louie should do whatever he wants. It's just a damn shame it's not as enjoyable as it was.

This was by far the best season imho.

In the Woods, Model and So Did the Fat Lady are among the top rated episodes. In fact, the top three episodes are from season 4.

I can see how people are disappointed about the switch to drama, but to me it feels that this is where Louie really feels at home. He has obviously put all his heart into the creation of the show and to me it just feels wrong to bitch about his art because he isn't cracking enough jokes anymore.

It's very rare to find anything on TV that's as true and honest as this show. The dialogue during the walk along the promenade was one of the absolute highlights of the show and I'd gladly trade a few laughs for this sort of brutal honesty any day. I can see how some people don't, but I guess you'll just have to stop watching.

A friend of mine who is a big fan of Louie's stand up actually disliked the show from episode 1 because of it's dramatic elements.

I felt cheated when I bought Season 4 on Amazon Instant Video, and discovered . . . . they've added commercials (for more Fx shows) to both the beginning and ending of each episode. That never happened with AIV for Louie Seasons 1-3.

After putting up with this for "Back" and "Model", I've asked Amazon for my money back, and sent an angry email to Fx.

I loved the season, I can't believe Louis had this kind of creativity and nuance. The depth of his writing and his understanding of classic directing techniques was beyond surprising coming from a comedian that didn't seem to have any experience with the medium.

Still, I can recognize that the turn toward introspective drama isn't for everyone, hell, it isn't for most people. This plays more like something at Cannes than anything else on TV. People keep mentioning Woody Allen, but I seem more Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini and quite a bit of David Lynch here. Those styles certainly aren't intended for mass consumption.

Congrats to FX too, most, probably no other network, would give him this much freedom to make this show as he wishes. Clearly he is more interested in making his art, rather than gaining or even keeping an audience. Even you don't like the show, you have to respect that.
