Feel cheated...

As the title says... I kinda feel cheated with this show.
It's like going to my favorite coffee shop, where I go everyday for the last 3 years, and all of a sudden, Im being handed tomato juice, instead of coffee, with no warning. Im not saying tomato juice is bad...all Im saying I went there for coffee.

I like Louis CK, he's one of my favorite COMEDIANS hands down. But this is not comedy anymore. Like others here have said, I think I laughed maybe 2 or 3 times during the entire season. I came here expecting comedy...weird, dark, twisted comedy for sure...but still 100% pure comedy. What I got instead is some artsy drama episodes. Im sorry, but Im just not interested in that.

If I wanted weird *beep* up drama, I would watch a Woody Allen movie. And speaking of Woody Allen..might he be the reason for this sudden style change? The Blue Jasmine experience might have changed LCK's optics on entertainment / television.
He is trying too hard to be something he is not. He should stick to comedy and stand up imo.

No.

Thank you for that insightful reply, i completely re-evaluated my standpoint after reading your thoughtful statement.

I don't get this at all...I feel each season has progressively gotten better. And it is the EXACT same show as it was in the first season. If anything, I had a hard time adjusting when the show first aired in Season 1 because it felt depressing (I loved Lucky Louie and was expecting something similar initially), and it has remained consistent, only the material is getting better (with the exception of Pamela's rancid face in every other episode)- I seriously despise that vile venomous 'woman'. Hate her character (and actor) with a passion.

reply

While I agree with most of what you say, office, I thought his drama was pretty good.

But the very beginning of "In the Woods" - where his friend wants to pick up girls - that was the best part - and funny.

I was never a Woody Allen fan, so I can't speak to that.

And I don't like tomato (or tomatoe as you say) juice.

People said the exact same thing about Woody Allen when he started making dramas. Seems to have worked out him.

George Carlin: It's all bullsh-t and it's bad for ya.

reply

He didn't make a tv show that shifted gears. He made films.

What difference does it make if you switch from comedy to drama in TV or film? I don't recall any such rule that a TV show can't mix it up. Dramatic shows often have light-hearted episodes to shift gears. The X-Files was the darkest show on network TV at the time but they would have episodes starring comedians to make funny episodes. That's called being creative and not limiting yourself where I'm from.

reply

Bait and switch. It's a common sales trick.

What we got here is... failure to communicate!

And you still insist he must create and perform only as you expect him to do. Sales trick? As if anyone is being duped or forced into watching this show against their will?

It tricked people by being one thing and is now another. People are allowed to complain.

Ohhhh, I get it. The program for which he is given total freedom to produce didn't continue to match your expectations, so . . . he tricked everyone? Got it. Very sly of him. Nefarious, even.

reply

Give me a break. Just because you're ok with the change doesn't mean he didn't totally change the tone of the show.

What we got here is... failure to communicate!

reply

I don't deny that the tone of the show has changed, but no-one was tricked or conned by a bait-and-switch scheme. A guy who is given total freedom by his network without interference from above has free-rein to experiment with the form. After three seasons, it would be a surprise if he didn't do so. Likewise, you are free to be disappointed and turn the channel. Imposing your own expectations on C. K. or saying you were somehow swindled or manipulated is simply being presumptuous.

reply

I agree there hasn't been a bait and switch, or that people were tricked.

reply

the format is similar to "seinfeld". stand up then the sitcom. has this been done before?
he needs more regular characters.he can't carry a whole show.can he hook up with hot chicks to give us uglies false hope we can get hot chicks. we need eye candy. i can only think of the blonde who stole his strawberry (not a euphemism) in miami?

reply

Is the show really that different? I remember the first season having a lot of drama too. Tonally I don't think much has changed except for it being a little more serious. But if you go back and watch the first few seasons you'll notice there really isn't some massive genre change that occurred one night on the show. It was always like that or maybe I'm just crazy.

reply

It seems really different to me.

What we got here is... failure to communicate!

reply

What a dope you are. Yeah. He wanted to sell it as comedy to make more money. It can't be that he just has complete creative control and this is what he feels like doing. The first season had artsy dramatic eps

reply

So if you buy the new record by your favorite rock band and they've done a 'jazz odyssey' and frankly it sucks, you can't say you feel a bit disappointed? You have to defend the SW prequels because, hey, that's what the creator wanted to do? No, you get to have your say. The loyalists are really coming down hard on anyone expressing disappointment here, seems like they are maybe trying to kid themselves too a bit..

reply

His so called comedies were always sad and his drama's are pretty funny.
What's your point?

reply

Yeah, it's no longer a straight up comedy but that doesn't mean the show is no longer good. I can understand why some people (stand-up comedy fans) don't like it anymore but I still love it. The episodes are still interesting but with a different tone.

reply

I disagree because this is not a STAND UP ACT. It's a television show. And what's wrong with dramatic comedies anyway? There are tons of these type of movies out there that are a joy to watch. Plus, I always thought this show was a portrayal of Louie CK's life, in a way.
So, no, this is not a stand up comedian show, it's a show about a comedian's life(style).

reply

You only laughed THREE times during The Model? I feel sorry for you...

"I do what I say and I say what I mean"

reply

I agree 100% with the original poster.. I miss the funny that was once in this show its so drastic now really ruins the entire show imo

reply

I like it because I never know what is going to happen. As long as it's good. And all the seasons were good. Last season was my favorite, people seem to like the first two best. I love them too. I'm not sure how I rank this season yet. I doubt it'll beat last season for me. But that's for personal reasons. Also because there was so much to love! Most shows would've had Parker Posey and the Late Show episodes two different seasons. The fact they were both in one season just blew me away! But at the same time there were episodes from season one and two that were just as great in their own quiet way. This season has been great as well though. Each episode leaves me deep in thought. And I do think they are also funny. It's interesting the first two episodes seemed like typical Louie episodes and then the following were kind of like films. But they're great films. It's cool to expect the unexpected.

reply

The coffee shop analogy is no good here. This show is almost like a living breathing organism. It's like a part of Louis CK that is growing with him. It started out as pure comedy, but as Louis got older and his perspectives and outlook on life have changed, the show has evolved.

Watch Jerry Seinfeld's new show Comedians in Cars getting Coffee. In the episode where he hangs out with Louis CK, Jerry makes the same observation while they are talking about Seinfeld. He says that unlike Seinfeld, Louis' show can grow with him and evolve into something different.

If you were expecting pure comedy then I feel for you but don't act like you've been cheated. The show has always been about looking at the world through Louis' eyes. That part hasn't changed. What's changed is Louis himself, and the show reflects that. I for one am happy to take this journey with him.

Idiots

reply

Only problem is, Louis isn't that interesting of a guy that there should exist a TV show about his personal growth.

He is a great comedian, but his private life is nothing special - boring even.

reply

Says who? The "Woods" arc was actually very interesting and I know a lot of people loved it. Don't just go by what you see on this forum full of self-made critics. Go on his facebook page and read the thousands of comments that are left there weekly. You find his life boring. Read that again. YOU, find his life boring. Not me, and not a lot of other people. Stop acting like your opinion is anything but just that, an opinion.

If he wanted to either play it safe or attract a mass audience it would be a very different program. Instead, it's available for those those who care to follow his viewpoint, what he has to offer and the experimentation that involves. And it doesn't involve his private life. This is no documentary.

I disagree. He may not be a rockstar or some exciting *beep* like that but he's a guy that you can relate to, and that is enough to make him incredibly interesting. At the same time though, I understand why some people don't enjoy this season. I personally think he's doing an amazing job with it and I'm excited to see where his career in filmmaking takes him.
