The character Nesmith is named and modeled after Michael Nesmith's character (also called Michael Nesmith) from a 60's show called The Monkees (monkey ... get it?) ...

the character designers even gave Nesmith Mike's trademark wool cap ...

you can look at the pictures for either the show or the actor to see him wearing the cap ...

why did they pick Mike, instead of Davy, Micky or Peter? my guess: because Mike is the only one who had a distinctive look that could be adapted to the character ... a wool cap ...

i will include a short Science Lesson with this history lesson: Nesmith is a chimpanzee, and chimpanzees are NOT monkeys, they are primates ...

Nesmith reminds me of Darwin from The Wild Thornberrys. :)

And yes, I believe you're completely right on all counts. I LOVE The Monkees!! 8D I miss Nick at Nite's Block Party Summers; they sometimes had Monkee Mondays. The only real reason to watch Nick at Nite nowadays is like, The Nanny. Maybe a few other good shows at times. It used to be totally unmissable. =( Not to get off on yet another rant about how nearly everything just seems to go right downhill as time marches on...
