Puzzled
Why would the celeb. Monty dine in a greasy spoon where he first met Mildred? was this staged? Did I miss something?

I thought it was because Monty was broke. I think he originally came from a family of money....but that was long gone. He tried investing in various businesses; but they failed miserably. He used what little money he had to continue the affectations of being rich. I also think it's mentioned that he was about to lose the family mansion. Dining in "Mildred's", was a low-priced establishment to buy a meal.
