James Gandolfini would've been absolutely perfect for the part,had he not died or was able to do it when production started. He was the same type of build and menacing appearance that Shannon didn't really have,even though he does in other roles.

shareShannon inhabited the role in many ways that most wouldn't notice, but the nature of the movie itself was to exaggerate the story to create an exciting film. There are plenty of moments that aren't accurate to Kuklinski's exact experiences in life, but Shannon got the personality as right as could be (although there is far more about Kuklinski that could and should have been shown if it wasn't beholden to being a motion picture meant for entertainment).
