Death in film
I understand that the death of one of the film's main characters near the end reflects the situation in the Bahamas at the time the film was made, i.e. that a number of gay men were being murdered.

shareI saw this film last night and came here, then was stunned when the description says he goes to the island to kill himself. Did I miss something?
shareThey must have removed it. One of the subject categories is, indeed, "Suicide," which I find strange.

Romeo and Johnny are such a beautiful couple on screen together. Wouldn't it be nice if the world was more apt to allow such a couple to be happy together.
People are apt to write anything on Wikipedia. Johnny's goal was to save his scholarship. Suicide is not a theme of this movie and even the description of Johnny as obsessive compulsive seems off the wall.
Romeo observed "you carry a lot." Johnny's art teacher urged Johnny to get his act together. Johnny was just a complicated fellow who also was dealing with his own coming out process.
As a Bahamian, I admit that there is a low tolerance towards homosexuality in the Bahamas. However, the gay men here aren't necessarily being murdered at a constant rate for being gay. You're more likely to hear some stories of them being beaten up than being killed for their lifestyle. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen. I'm just saying that it doesn't happen as often as you might have believed.
