Racism in the Bahamas?

The part of this movie I didn't understand were the plot point dealing with race. I am quite oblivious about the situation with race and racism in the Bahamas. Which race is more common and is any of them oppressed? I was especially confused about the part where Johnny says "I'm not white" to Romeo, why was that?
