Why cancelled and why so quickly?

Why was the show cancelled? [I know it can't solely boil down to rating. Are they trying to find a more compatible lead-out for Conan or did Lopez finally flip out on the wrong executive?] And why so quickly? Cancelled today and gone tomorrow--literally--feels a bit cold for a two year old talk show. They could have at least given him a final week, but maybe they were terrified of what he would say.

HAHA who cares? This is GREAT! Lopez sucks! So glad TBS canceled. THANK YOU TBS.

reply

Because he only makes fun of young girls like LL. Because he is unfunny and untalented? He should of never of had a show in the first place.

reply

Who cares? TV instantly became a lot better now that Lopez's unfunny tripe is off the airwaves.

This happens. This is something that happens.

I agree with the OP. Oprah started talking about leaving her show a year before it happened. A 2 day notice? Something's fishy here.

Agreed. There's more to this than just low ratings. You don't just cancel a show and air the finale within less than a week. We may never know, then again in the Internet era where "insiders" leak info left and right, maybe we will...

Oh stewardess...I speak jive.

Everything is ratings. That's how the network makes their money.

Save one, every response was about how bad the show sucked. Did I mention anywhere in my original post that I thought Lopez was a comedy God or that I like the show or find Lopez talented? What I wanted to know was what lead to the decision to cancel and so abruptly. Whether the people here realize it or not it is fairly uncommon for someone to have their show cancelled so abruptly (Conan got to trash NBC for almost two weeks before they finally took him off and that was a hostile reaction).

The networks like to build up "George Lopez's Final Week," and see some sort of ratings bump for a final show, if Lopez Tonight were cancelled exclusively based on money then they would want to recoup some losses by having a highly rated final week. Plus, it's unlikely they'll get a lead-out for Conan on such short notice and having nothing in the slot behind him isn't going to be ratings bonanza either.

I'd like to know if anyone knows WHY the show was cancelled besides low ratings, not that the show sucked. We've got that already.

He must have had a falling out with a producer. That's the only thing that would make sense.

I agree with you its weird. It rarely happens THAT fast. I even asked this question in another thread myself. They announced the guy was cancelled on Wednesday. By Thursday its completely gone. And having Arsenio there remineded me when his show was cancelled (it was 17 years ago already....wow I'm getting old lol) he was still on the air for another 2 months after the announcement. Lopez basically finished out the week.

I'm with the other poster though, it mustve been a HUGE fallen out with top people. It mustve been cursing and threats, legal action, something because they were basically told the guy 'we want your shyt off the lot by the weekend'. No grand finales, no build up to an ending, no 'final week', nothing! And the way the guy acted in those last two episodes showed how bitter he was. I'm surprised he showed up at all in the final show lol.

Believe me, its George Lopez, its going to REALLY come out lol. Give it a few weeks when the dust settled and his commitment to the network is officially over (well its over now, but I'm GUESSING he still under contract of some kind), I doubt he wont let it alllll out. Pull a Conan lol.

Kinda obvious here - though still just speculation. Lopez has a HISTORY of knocking people, and former bosses and networks. There was NO CHANCE TBS was going to take the public pummeling that NBC took for MONTHS at the hands of their own late night stars, Leno and Conan. NBC still is thought of as a joke of a network after be trashed almost nightly for so long. There was nothing to gain here for TBS by promoting a 'Finale Week' for an already low rated show that virtually nobody gave a hoot about. Any revenue bump would have been minimal. And to repeat - the historical reactions of Lopez would indicate he might really be more trouble than he's worth.

It's not like Lopez is a Conan or a Leno, personalities with large followings who brought in decent ratings every night, and who, if they left, would take viewers with them. Lopez isn't going ANYWHERE. If he ever gets another show, it ain't gonna be of the late night talk variety.

I'm betting TBS could put Everybody Loves Raymond/Seinfeld reruns on after Conan and get the same number of viewers, possibly even more. So what's the point in even RISKING having Lopez go on for 2 or so months, or even a week, and trash the network and start his inevitable blame game?? They probably figured they couldn't rework the ad buys in 24 hours, but by next Monday, it could get sorted out. So Bye Bye to George. No reason to drag this mess out. Just have a good clean cut off. Makes sense to me.
