Andrea Roth - may contain spoliers

For me Andrea Roth ruined this movie, she was way over the top spiteful and nasty, a real sour-puss. I know her character is dealing with loss and wanting to buy the house etc but I felt that another actress would have played the role better. The rest of the cast were great and gelled as a family unit but she just stuck out. Shame really, as I like to rewatch Christmas movies, especially when the wonderful Bruce Davison is in them, but this one is a once only. I know others may Ms Roth is playing a role and I agree but she did it with too much nastiness so that instead of having sympathy for the character and her plight you hated her, not good at all.

Completely agree. At one point, I asked my daughter "Are we really supposed to like her?" Because she is completely unlikable and not very enjoyable to watch.

The sequel, which is supposed to be a LOT better, does not have her in the lead role but another actress.

What is the sequel?

I agree, at first she is really nasty. Then at the Christmas party when she is going to show him the ornament, she is too smiley. I mean, every time they cut to her, she has this over the top "ain't I cute" huge smile on her face the whole time. It was just too much for the situation. I said to my mom, "you can tell from that smile that she thinks an awful lot of herself". My mom agreed. Cute movie though.

I've got this on now, and I have to agree. I've never seen this actress before and based on this role i don't ever want to see her again. She has such a blank look on her face throughout the movie.

Also, why does being a recent widow make it okay for her to be a total bitch? I like the sister much more and I would rather she be the heroine than Jessica.

I'm watching it now and all I keep thinking is that there is no way this guy can be attracted to that woman. He should have sued her for sabotaging his efforts to sell his house. She's really a distasteful person. Everyone else in the cast is so likable that she seems just creepy.

I cannot believe the expressed ignorance in all of the above posts.
Andrea Roth plays the role of a mother who has lost her husband.
She is supposed to be unhappy...bitter and disconnected to those around her.
Her dysfunction is exacerbated by her father selling the family home to a stranger. She mistakenly interprets her father's decision to sell the home as another rejection in her life.
Therefore her character is supposed to be unattractive.
The fact that so many of you dislike her is testiment to the successful Direction
and professional acting of Andrea Roth.
This movie is essentially about loss and redemption.
I wonder how many of you have seen the movie Scrooge?

Her father made the decision to sell the house a year before the movie started. She made the decision to buy the house after isolating herself from her family for awhile then announcing (after finding out that the house was already sold) that she wanted to buy it. She had nobody but herself to blame. Loss is no excuse for acting like a spoiled adolescent. She dug and demanded until she found a loophole to exploit then sabotaged the sale. I think it would have been a more honest movie if she'd gotten her ill-gotten gains and lost the man.

I like your assessment of the character and her situation. She came good at the end which is the main thing.
