...that decided to crop all of the footage to 1.78:1 ? Since this program centers around footage that would have been shot in an aspect ratio of about 1.37:1 we are not being shown a large percentage of the original frame area.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

Cropping video from 4:3 to 16:9 for widescreen HDTV viewing can be worthwhile,if done with TLC. For example, The World at War just under went a major restoration for BluRay that included 16:9 cropping and 5.1 sound, and IMO it blows away the DVD. The company doing the restoration went through each frame and IMO, they did a good job on the cropping, sharpness and color enhancement. TWAW has never looked and sounded so good.

Most film purists seem to hate cropping and believe film should always been shown in the OAR. I tend to agree, but still like the way some older 4:3 films look in 16:9 widescreen.

As bad as the cropping can be, I noticed more than a few shots which were S-T-R-E-T-C-H-E-D to fit the new aspect ratio. Apparently, cropping would have removed siginificant visual information. But stretching? What's wrong with pillar-boxing?
