Thoughts on the film?

My thoughts: I respect that they took the story in a different direction and some parts of it work better than others. The animation is striking and the character design is memorable. Voice acting was very good and there are some heartfelt moments along the way. 8/10.

I actually think it's totally disrespectful to take the original story and turn it into political propaganda.

reply

I'd rather have it turned into political propaganda than sentimental family mush, as Disney did.

reply

Nope.

reply

You obviously haven't seen many Guillermo Del Toro movies, they're ALL political.

reply

I know they are, what's your point?

reply

Why should he omit it from Pinocchio? Pinocchio and Gepetto ARE Italian, so why not mix it with politically-motivated eras of Italy like Mussolini and the Fascists? Don't forget, the main Fascist's son in this movie does turn against his father, so it's a message of hope.

reply

Why? Because it's not in the original story. If he can't restrain himself, then he should've adapted another story that's all about politics. This one's been overdone anyway.

reply

Who cares if it's not in the original story? Certainly not Walt Disney. In the original story, Pinocchio is HANGED by nefarious characters and left for dead at one point. Disney CONVENIENTLY chose to leave that part out of the 1940 animation, for some strange (saccharine) reason.

Who cares now, eh? Pot calling the kettle black, eh?

reply

I care. I think it's disrespectful when another person's work is used as a vehicle for political propaganda.

"Pot calling the kettle black, eh?"

Not really...

reply

Politics seems to rule the world these days, in case you didn't notice.

And the author is long dead. Shame you can't contact him to complain.

reply

I can notice it and still not like it.

Indeed, that's why I did it here.

reply

I’d agree with all of that. I really enjoyed it and the only negative for me was the music.. I found the songs unnecessary and a bit underwhelming. Still, a fine animated film. I’d also give it 8/10

reply

Some of the elements caught me off guard, like the blue fairy looking like a Biblical description of an angel.

reply

I know the story is a tale as old as time, but I was expecting something a bit more "innovative" in this movie.

The songs were sometimes too close to each other, and created long sections of the movie without a lot of interest.
Pinocchio was, perhaps, annoying at times.

The movie should have been cut downt 20 minutes, at least.

The good:
- Soundtrack very good
- Animation very good
- Good voice acting, charming characters in general (the worst character was probably Pinocchio himself)
- I enjoyed the fairy/demon part

reply

I liked the movie overall, but I agree it was paced poorly and could have been cut down a bit.

reply

Del Toro's Pinocchio is PERFECT in every single fucking way.

The Disney versions can GO TO HELL.

reply

Technically fine but I found it charmless and the characters creepy and annoying. I really wanted to like it more.
