what was the point of the trivia contest? what a waste of time

at first I thought he was doing the trivia contest because there was going to be a big cash reward or something, I mean he is talking about this being his last semester and doing something great.

How the HELL was going around a bunch of crappy bars great? how was winning a box of wine great? this movie made no sense. I can't believe I wasted my time with this
