Why is Dad Totally Helpless?

Does he not know even the basic use of kitchen appliances?

I was taught how to do basic reheating of items as early as 6, was cooking soups, grilling sandwiches, popping popcorn (microwave popcorn and Jiffy Pop didn't exist). Saw my first microwave oven at 18. Remember Amana Radar Range?Baked cookies, cakes by 12. And so forth.

I just cringed at the idea of daughter creating meals for him to reheat over the next few months.

She should have said, "Dad, I'm out of here. I'll be back when I get back. Take care. I love you. Bye!" I feel certain he would have survived.

I like convenience meals from the supermarket. I suppose there are people like the dad in this. They can't or won't go to the shops or take-aways. And they can't cook or won't cook even if they have someone to do their shopping for them.

I have met people like him who are smart in some ways, but completely helpless when it comes to basic skills or taking care of themselves.
