While I don't condone the violence, it was completely unnecessary for him to humiliate the student like that. It was unprovoked and unprofessional. He was a teacher and we didn't have enough information about the student to understand why his work was so poor. Regardless, if that's the kind of behavior a teacher exhibits, is it in any way surprisingly that those he teaches would react accordingly?
I am not siding with the student, though, I think they both acted poorly but what the student did was worse. I think the teacher should have been suspended. But I also think the student should have been expelled.
And the teacher did sue the school and lost. After the time skip he is looking at a newspaper clipping that reported it.
