Someone please explain what happened? (The facts, not whos fault it is)

So I do remember seeing all this happen 3 years ago in the news. But never understood why.
So anyone care to explain the background of the war, who attacked who, and what happened in the end. And I don't want a political, pro Russian, pro Georgian debate here, just the facts!

Oh and I did try to do some research of my own but found it hard to understand, so I really would appreciate a good explanation, I don't care how short or long, as long as it explains the story.

(Just incase you don't know, im talking bout the actual war, not the movie).

Situation is very simple, when USSR broke up many countrys wanted to be independant, South Osetia and Abhazia also(from Georgia). In early 90s there was war in Osetia and Abhazia, in the end South Osetia and Abhazai got de facto independance, but they werent recognized by other countrys(even Russia), Russia became peacekeepers in this republics, because then Russian-Georgian relations were much better, so time have past, almost 20 years, but situation didnt changed, republics didnt get de jure independance, but all this years were de facto developed like independent states. Russian-Georgians relations became much worser, there were small conflicts on Georgian-Osetian borders, nothing big, so....

In 2008 Saakashvilly decided to take all land back, and started operation against South Osetia, after that he planed to return Abhazia also. So he started to bomb Chinvally(capital of South Osetian), but russian forces helped osetians and ruined Saakashvilly plans. War lasted 5 days, there were many civil victims, because of city bombings. Thats all. Now South Osetia and Abhazia are recognized de jure by few countrys, but situation is still difficult, especialy in Osetia.

Offcourse situatuion is much more difficult, there is long history of conflict, there were genocide crimes from both sides in 90s e.t.c. I explained simple facts.

Actualy i live in EU, but i work as an electrician in Abhazia, last summer.

Thats good, I only really wanted to know the basic facts that would sum up the reason behind the War.
Thanks alot, now I understand what happened!

First good post I read, no emotion, only facts without any analytics.

No one can say he know the true about this conflict, but better to manipulate with facts.

Which is the exact answer I was looking for :)
After reading that, I know theres no real good side in a War, but it certainly doesn't seem like Georgians were the good guys as portrayed in the movie.

Thannks for explaining, much appreciated!

So first you want dry facts, "no political" analysis, and after one person summing it (all?) up you decide the Georgians are the bastards?

I am not saying I am in favour of one or another. Just that you still only have a bare minimum of understanding.

With every story it is colored by the one that tells it. This story is told from the Georgian side of things. Ofcourse the Russians are the badguys. Just as the Germans are the badguys in WWII, but still I dare to say some bad sh*t went down on the allied side.

reply

So you compare the Germans of WW2 to the Georgians of this conflict? Meh, sounds about right. Both were wrong as sh!t. You can be neutral and still admit who started a violent conflict. Georgia started it, then cried when Russia came back swinging.

reply

I didn't compare anyone to anything. Don't make it look like I said that. I said the Germans lost WWII and therefore they are the badguys. They did good things too. Just the same as the allied forces did bad things.

reply

No. The Georgia point of view should be that they are at fault too. The truth is as it is. Being the aggressor and attacking Russia gets Georgia what it deserves. If Georgia had won, that is one thing. But Georgia got its ass owned AND started the fight.

reply

Yup. They are the bad guys in the sense that they started the war.
