I have never watched a musical

and won't start now.

You wouldn't want people to think you were gay.

You wouldn't want people to think you were gay.

lmao.

reply

I've had dates with women because I like musicals. It's stupid to think liking musicals will make you gay.

reply

Not even a Disney movie?

reply

What is the point of this thread, exactly?

reply

that musicals are a waste of time.

reply

Even Disney?

reply

I am a 54 year old male with no grand kids - why would I watch Disney ???

reply

Because you are your own individual person and you choose to watch whatever you want to, whether it fits the stereotypes of your demographic or not.

And besides, Star Wars and Marvel Cinematic Universe movies are all technically Disney movies anyway.

Is okay, you're 54 years old, old enough to be narrow-minded if you so choose.

You're Not narrow-minded because you don't like musicals, hey some people don't like musicals, or war movies, dramas and other genres. You're narrow-minded, because you're ignorant enough to state that an entire genre of film is a waste of time.

I just hope that after 54 years on this planet that you are smart enough to revoke comments as asinine as that when you realise the absurdity of them.

reply

In your opinion. Some of us love the uplifting, extravagant, outrageous, absolutely unreal fantasy of the musical genre. There's too much "grimdark" in the movies today. Once in a while I like it when movies give me something that entertains me and makes me feel nice instead of leaving the theater depressed and drained.

reply

He thinks it will make him gay

reply

If that really was the case that would mean that he either is gay already and is scared of letting it out OR he has the weakest personality ever and is being manipulated by everything he reads, sees and hears.
I'm a 42 year old man who enjoys musicals (this one especially because it has awesome music, a good story - even if not close to the real story - AND it has frickin gorgeous Zendaya) and I'm still totally straight (and not afraid of gays either)...
Just grow up.

reply

How do you know that they are a waste of time if you've never watched one?

reply

No, a waste of time is logging in, navigating to the page for The Greatest Showman discussions, and posting that you have never watched a musical and do not plan to start now.

That is a total waste of time.

reply

No one cares, dickhead.

Also, never seen Grease? What a dimwit.

Please don't turn this place into the cesspool that the old IMDB boards used to be.

Reported? You don't believe in freedom of speech? If he wants to spout off his ignorant opinion, that's his right. Sure it's hard to stomach his opinion, but moderating it? Please think about a world of censored opinions. Like think really hard about that. With censorship you wouldn't have movies like this for very long.

Expressing opinions about something is one thing. Vulgar personal insults hurled directly at another user of this site are something else entirely. On internet discussion boards, that is known as "flaming," and is generally not tolerated.

This is not a free-for-all. Moviechat.org has specific Community Standards that users of the site agree to abide by, and the Standards specifically prohibit flaming: "No trolling, flaming, spamming or unsolicited advertising."

where you been??

I on the other hand grew up in NY with a home with one TV. You and I are of a similar age, and in NY when I was young, there were lots of old movies playing on TV. Quite a few were musicals. Thanks to my sister, I sat through a number of them.

Some are pretty good. Notably, "Singin' in the Rain" was really fun, and made me a fan of Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor.

I won't tell you you're missing a lot, but I will tell you musicals can be good movies.

reply

He's a 54 year old man who's not open minded and goes by of what he thinks society frowns on.

reply

I agree. Of course I grew up during the golden age of disney in the 90's but I also loved watching things like Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and a bunch of other things made me realize what great lyrics and music can do for a story.

I'm trying to go for an entertaining, informative youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see and if you have any thoughts or criticisms, i'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance. Review right here-https://youtu.be/8_-6y44Ueio

What about a music comedy like The Blues Brothers?

While not strictly a musical, what about an intense music drama like Whiplash? It's solid.

Or comedies like Ferris Bueller's Day Off which has a musical sequence?

In terms of actual musicals, what about La La Land? It's a contemporary musical that's as much a modern romance movie as it is a musical.. The only part that could be considered "camp" is the opening highway dance scene... the rest is pretty "straight" or girls being pretty...

To be honest, I've seen the trailer for The Greatest Showman and it doesn't seem compelling... I can't judge the actual movie as I haven't seen it... To be honest, I'd rather go to an actual musical at the theatre with a date then watch a movie musical...

reply

The Blues Brothers was fun back in the day but I wouldn't watch a similar movie today. A musical sequence I may be able to tolerate. No interest in La La Land or Whiplash

reply

You saw em both!

reply

I don't like musicals, but the movie version of Chicago was amazing.

reply

Actually, Chicago wasn't all that amazing. But Singin' in the Rain, West Side Story are.

reply

You should at least try one. If you don't like music you're dead inside. You don't know if you like it or not until you try it 😊
Old musicals tend to be the best. La la land was a disappointment for me. I highly recommend u NOT start out on that movie.
I haven't seen the Greatest Showman yet, but I want to!
Good musicals to watch:
Annie
Sound of Music
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin
Mary Poppins
(I heard Les Miserab is very good although I've never seen it)
Singin in the Rain (haven't seen that either but I know it's probably good)
Wizard of Oz
All the High School Musical Movies
Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory
