How does this have a chance?

This looks like a movie that no one asked for, and I'm observing this as a fan of Hugh Jackman, musicals, and musicals starring Hugh Jackman. Maybe Fox expected this to bomb and added it to the number of reasons to sell off to Disney?

I have never watched a musical

Hopefully it doesn't.

I plan to see it unless everyone says it's absolutely terrible, I love musicals and so few are made these days that I'm always interested in a new one.

I enjoyed it very much. More than I thought I would.
The following night I saw Downsizing. I pretty much fell asleep. I DISliked it a lot more than I thought I would.
One difference that I see is that The Greatest Showman is there to ENTERTAIN me.
I dont have any real idea WHAT Downsizing is supposed to do. Whatever it was, it failed with me.

Hey Fred, if you're a fan of musicals I highly suggest you check this out. It's not only totally extravagant but every song is a winner too. I think it will hold over very well box office wise for many weeks to come.

I'm trying to go for an engaging, funny youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see and if you have any thoughts or criticisms, i'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance. A review of the movie here-https://youtu.be/8_-6y44Ueio

That's reassuring to hear, CraigJames. After learning that it is a musical, I look forward to this film being the greatest showpiece in the canon of Hugh Jackman musicals. Merry New Year to you and yours...

you as well

I want to see it in the theater but I'm on a budget for the next month. Hopefully it hasn't disappeared from the theater by late January.

This was an average movie for me. There are so many better musicals out there that they could have adapted, but this was OK. I honestly don't remember any of the songs though. They all sounded very similar to one another.

Saw it today and we all love it.

reply

All right, all right, I'll get on seeing it. Yeesh!

reply

I liked it, but I felt none of the songs were that memorable. There are so many better musicals out there and I am scratching my head wondering how this did so well at the box office.

reply

Probably due to lack of direct competition and audience appetite. I found it to be highly entertaining with a good amount of memorable numbers, so I'd wager that other people felt the same way, thus leading to positive word of mouth bringing in sustained business.

reply

It was entertaining, but not close to any of the amazing musicals I have seen in my life. You never know what the public will or will not like. It is a crap shoot.

reply

True enough. I wouldn't put it in my top musicals shortlist, but it worked well enough. Audiences responded well to something halfway decent - go figure.
