Why 3 Musical Theater Stars Are Heading to Fox

By Rebecca Welch | Posted July 25, 2016, 4:30 p.m.

Roaring lions, clowns on unicycles, and trapeze swingers are just a few of the circus staples that could be attributed to P.T. Barnum, and 20th Century Fox wants to delve deeper into who some consider to be “The Greatest Showman on Earth.” Come one and come all! This semi-biographical film about the famous showman, who created the three-ring circus, will follow his financial downfall after he invites Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind stateside to perform a series of concerts. The film, cast by noted casting experts Telsey + Company, will feature its own musical element with some veterans of the genre: The cast of songbirds currently includes Hugh Jackman as Barnum, Michelle Williams as Lind, Zendaya, and Zac Efron, heading back to his “High School Musical” roots. Filming on the project is set to begin in the fall around late October in New York, with rehearsals beginning in September.

*They seemed to have based their storyline on the old published details which talked about the angle on the infatuation with Jenny Lind. According to updates on the script, the focus of the movie has de-emphasized the Jenny Lind story and is giving the spotlight to how Barnum formed the famous circus.

*The casting of Jenny Lind is still to be finalized, from what I hear. Michelle Williams is playing the role of Charity, Barnum's wife.

*No word yet on whether any of the Broadway actors who were part of the reading will be part of the movie musical.

*Most importantly, it looks like the project is generally on schedule -- with filming in NYC starting in late October ( or maybe early November?) The start of rehearsals will be some time in September, which gives Hugh a time to recharge after what may have been exhausting WOLVERINE 3 filming.

*Not indicated is the studio recording of the songs ( it is NOT going to be live-singing as in Les Miserables) which will be needed prior to filming ( where the actors will presumably act and lip-synch at the same time). But this would be the recorded songs that will form the soundtrack for the movie, which expectedly will also be released 

What about the lead star? Is he now free from his WOLVERINE 3 filming?

Yessssss! WOLVERINE 3 has just wrapped filming...and Hugh sends a message of Thanks to New Mexico where the last phase of filming took place !

And Hugh has shaved all the facial hair and is now ready, presumably after a well-earned break, to put on the costume and hairstyle for Phineas T. Barnum 

Where did you hear that ms. Williams is going to play Charity Barnum?

As the title says.

reply

Sorry, can't disclose the source. But you can wait for official announcements to confirm this.

reply

Rebecca Ferguson has now been announced in the role of Jenny Lind.

Please see thread on the topic.

reply

OP- so it means williams is supporting?

reply

From what I hear, it is the Charity role which is the lead female role ( the role that is going to Michelle Williams) and that the Jenny role is the supporting role ( the role going to Rebecca). The script has been revised from the original one written by Jenny Bicks ( which had more emphasis on the Jenny involvement). As indicated in subsequent reports (by Deadline.com, if I am not mistaken), the main change is said to be the greater emphasis on the part of Barnum's life when he became a full-blown impresario ( such as in the founding of the tent circus). The script was subsequently reviewed by Bill Condon ( who directed DREAMGIRLS and the forthcoming live-action release of Beauty and the Beast). I understand though that the final script was written by Oscar winner Michael Arndt.

I think this movie will have as much dramatic highlights as musical features -- which would be a particular strength of Michelle Williams.

Also, it is Michelle who has the more extensive experience when it comes to musicals, as she portrayed the role of Sally Bowles in the Broadway revival of CABARET. It does make sense if she is offered the more substantive role. I don't think Rebecca has any or much professional experience in musicals ( although it seems she went to music school).

Re the other casting -- I think the role of Philip ( Zac Efron) will also have some strong emphasis as well...and maybe to a lesser extent the role of Zendaya as well, in terms of both drama and music.

It seems this film will have strong ensemble types of roles, even if the main role goes to Hugh Jackman as Phineas Taylor Barnum. Just like Les Miserables 

reply

Thanks so much OP.... she's doing supporting recently with all her movies.

reply

You're welcome 

However --

It seems you're keen that Michelle is recognized for potential acting honors --she may have the stronger female role, but who knows how Fox may market this movie, especially if it turns out to be awards-worthy and is promoted for CONSIDERATION by the AMPAS ( which votes for Oscar awards). There are a number of fairly important roles and we are not sure if all will be supported for whatever category they may be playing in.

Just like in Les Miserables, only Hugh Jackman was presented as a lead actor for Oscar consideration. Everyone else, including Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, etc., was classified as SUPPORTING.

The film has not been made...and reviewed...so it is a long way ahead for the project. Very early days yet!

Let's just hope it comes out with the same degree of artistic and commercial success as Les Miserables. Btw, two other musicals may compete with Greatest Showman -- the live action BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, PITCH PERFECT 3. Also, there is an announced remake of a film that may or may not be considered a musical -- A Star is Born with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper -- which has not announced any release date yet.

It looks like some very early pre-production work is already underway, per IMDB notes --

Location Management

Jennifer Mary Mears ... location scout

Maybe around New York or maybe Connecticut where Barnum lived and where he had built his museum for displaying various curiousities ?

reply

Do you know how old Barnum is supposed to be in this version of the story? Also, is it supposed to be a dramatic character study of Barnum where Hugh will have to transform to look like the real Barnum (chubby and losing hair, lol) or is it going to be a fun movie musical like Mary Poppins (which I saw Michael Gracey mention) where Hugh does not have to transform his body at all and can just put on a wig and 1800s style clothes and be fine playing the role.

reply

LOL - I absolutely have no idea how Hugh Jackman, film Adonis, will be profiled physically in this movie.

It is likely a dramatic musical, with strong characterizations ( Michelle Williams does not usually take roles which are light and breezy if that is an indication...also there should be a great deal of acting involved)... and since the final script was written by Oscar winner Michael Arndt, I am confident the storyline will be strong and well-written and characterizations well-defined. I recall that even the role for which Zac was in talks then would have some dramatic elements. Hopefully, there will also be a shared musical number between Barnum and his ringmaster/assistant.

Given that they "borrowed" some great Broadway voices for the final reading ( including Jeremy Jordan, Cynthia Erivo, Keala Settle, Alison Luff, Caroline Bowman, Andrew Keenan Bolger, etc,), it will likely have a beautiful and bountiful musical score ( with Barnum probably taking the lion's share of the singing). We saw the concert staging of THIS IS ME ( via some YouTube uploads), and even if that song is not meant for Barnum but for circus freaks -- you can discern the dramatic elements in the lyrics -- it is the song of people who have been turned away because they look different!

...and it will likely have some dance spectacle numbers ( Michael Gracey's forte includes choreography although he may not do it himself here, but he is likely going to be the strong guiding light for that aspect of the creative design). I can't imagine a portly-looking Barnum doing all those sing-and-dance numbers 

It will likely carry the period-piece look! Hugh does well with period piece roles, complete with costume and wigs ( Les Miserables, The Prestige, Kate and Leopold, the Conquistador part of THE FOUNTAIN trifecta ...even with ...er...Beauty and the Beast )

reply

Aw your take is so lovely!  I hope you are right about all that! 

reply

I hope OP is got false information about Williams's roles as Charity. I hope she does stick with Lind..afterall I have faith in Williams withthat lead role. I've waiting for over 10 years for her to get Oscar. Lind's role is different than her deep, painful wife that she always play..

reply

I do understand why you would want Michelle to diversify her role choices. She has done that to some extent...and her 3 Oscar nominations are nothing to sneeze at. I am glad that she is part of this film project as she has both acting and singing chops...and her chemistry with Hugh ( did you see them in DECEPTION) works very well.

Let's wait for official confirmation of the casting.

reply

This has potential, I hope something good result.

I hope to have a good amount of drama and a good musical number between Hugh and Zac.😀

I have my doubts with Zendaya. She has a good voice, her vocals are nice and she is a great dancer but regard to performance I haven't seen something in which she is good. But Michelle Williams is excellent and elevates the film to another level.

The last thing I heard is that filming begins on November 3rd in NYC. So the rehearsals should start early september and we should have more cast anounced. To which I hope has broadway talent.

Same thing from what I have heard!

There will also be the actual studio recording of the musical score, before filming takes place, as the format will be via lipsynching! I hope we also get an early soundtrack album from the movie ... and which will be released (hopefully!) even before the film is released !

I wonder if they will release one or two songs way ahead, as a sort of calling card for this movie musical!

I posted this last August 18 on the Zendaya thread.

A well-known film blogger/critic who used to head CHUD tweets this about Zendaya in her debut movie in SPIDERMAN ( where she is supposed to play Mary Jane) --

So if you're like "Can she act?" (because Marvel's casting has been so bad before, I guess?) - yes, she is good in the role.

devin faraci ‏@devincf · 1h1 hour ago

BTW, I was at SDCC where they showed SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING footage and Zendaya was really good in it.

If she has been cast in the lead role in SPIDERMAN: HOMECOMING, maybe she does have acting chops.

Day #1. THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. Amazing to be working with this cast and crew. Cheers to you - Michael Gracey!!

It is a movie musical, so it is likely that he was referring to the first day of official pre-production... and/or the start of rehearsals... as there are expected to be a full-blown musical score, many dance numbers, other spectacles ( this is going to be related to that part of his life where the tent circus was a highlight)...and of course the dramatic aspects of the storyline.

And since this will not feature live-singing, the songs will likely be eventually recorded in a studio ... and it will be linked to the live action-and-dialog scenes when they start filming. If you have seen other movie musicals or even the filmed version of the stage musical OKLAHOMA! ( with Hugh Jackman), that was the process that was followed.

It was different for Les Miserables which went through a slightly different filming process ( especially because it was a sung-through musical with live-singing... while it will be a typical song and book musical for SHOWMAN, with both music and dialog). For Les Mis, if I remember right, Jackman went through almost two months of rehearsals while the rest went through rehearsals for about 5 weeks or so, before first filming happened ( where acting with live singing by the actors was a key aspect). Another major difference may be the presence of major dance numbers in SHOWMAN, while Les Miserables had none ( except for that tiny bit at the wedding). Also, Les Mis had action scenes ( the battles between the young rebels and the government) while Showman has circus acts!

But this is exciting news -- after waiting from 2009 to get this project really off the ground!

reply

So Baj, that means they're filming now? Like in NYC? Or, that's still gonna be a long while for the rest of the cast, like Efron for example?

reply

I am not familiar with the general practice for movie musicals. For stage musicals, there is the extended rehearsal period ( maybe 2 months or so), followed by live previews before a show has its official opening night. It is a little more secretive when it comes to studio movie musicals 

But if they are following what Les Miserables did ( a fairly large group of us here on IMDB were following most details during pre-production, filming, and post-production ) before principal photography ( filming) takes place, there could be an extended amount of rehearsals, especially for lead actor Hugh Jackman ( As Jean Valjean, I think he was rehearsing for something like 8 weeks or so...although the others had to rehearse for only 4-5 weeks), and likely as well as for many action and dramatic scenes. Btw, Les Miserables was a sung-through musical ( hardly any dialog -- everything was sung, from songs to recitatives, aka dialogs) so that was likely the reason for the extended rehearsal period. But Les Miserables did not have any dance scenes, which would be a likely difference with GREATEST SHOWMAN.

Also, this is likely the phase for official pre-production ( completion of casting, production design and building of sets, costume and makeup design, choreography plan, cinematography plan, sound design, studio and outside filming locale engagements, etc.) before they actually start filming. What has been shared so far publicly is that the working script seems to have been completed ( final screenwriter is Michael Arndt) while the musical score by Pasek and Paul is ready enough for filming? Film scoring will likely happen towards or during post-production.

But there is another aspect that has been mentioned before that is not similar to Les Miserables and will have to take place before filming -- the songs will be recorded in a sound studio and will be the basis for the lipsynching ( vs live-singing for Les Miserables) as the actors act out their scenes. I am hoping that this will also be the basis for a movie soundtrack album!

I think someone here mentioned earlier that he/she has heard an early November start of filming. I have heard similar things -- so maybe it might happen then?

Let's hope Hugh will fill us in on the developments as they go along 

We were lucky with Les Miserables -- it was not only media (mainstream and social media) which provided many details on developments but also the actors themselves who shared freely of their own experiences. Russell Crowe was particularly funny and shared a lot of details. So did Samantha Barks and the Barricade Boys ( the young rebels), including details on how many takes they had to do for particular songs! Tom Hooper was also allowing early promo clips as they were filming. Hugh was not doing too many tweets but he would occasionally have a clip on what was happening on set or when he had a particular message which he recorded on set. Maybe he will share more this time? Maybe Zac will also share something? Or Zendaya?

Unless they use the same promo strategy of total secrecy like what FOX, director James Mangold, cast led by Hugh Jackman, have adapted for Hugh's finale Wolverine movie, now tentatively known as WOLVERINE 3 -- complete blackout! We don't even know the official title of the movie (which is due out in early March 2017) -LOL!

New Casting notices --

www.backstage.com/news/casting/now-casting-hugh-jackmans-greatest-showman-earth-and-more-59194/

Today’s Backstage casting notices include the chance for you to get up close and personal with Hugh Jackman in his upcoming feature, “The Greatest Showman on Earth.” We also have three other fantastic on-camera opportunities. Check them out below!

“THE GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH”
The Hugh Jackman-starring feature film, “The Greatest Showman on Earth,” is currently casting two young actors for supporting roles. The project seeks one female actor, aged 11–13, who “can sing very well,” and one male actor, aged 10–12, to depict a young version of Jackman’s character. Rehearsals are slated for October, with shooting set to begin in November at an undisclosed location.

reply

Hm, thanks for the update Baj, do you think the cast will all be in NYC in October? Like Efron, etc? Or, will that be in November, because I know Hugh has been in NYC for a while now.

Is the location even gonna be in New York City, I heard it was, but not sure.

reply

Hugh and his family have been residents of New York City since late 2008. Hence, you see him in informal photos moving around the city. He is as much a Broadway performer as he is a film star, and living in NYC makes it easy for him to accept theatre roles ( although he has been on Broadway only 4 times since 2003 but he has participated in theatre-related activities like hosting the TONY awards 4 times).

We don't know where they will be rehearsing nor where they will be filming. There was mention of New York City as the filming locale. Maybe the choice has something to do with tax credit privileges. And maybe it might be because Barnum lived mostly in Connecticutt ( and probably moved around the tri-state area) and period architecture will be available in the tri-state. Plus the New York area is very rich in performing talent, especially for musical theatre on Broadway, in case they need to cast from this pool. Of course we do not know whether there will be any outside filming at all ( they may film inside sound stages most of the time?).

I think filming is generally done in an almost secretive manner...so the chances of seeing anything or anyone might not have a high probability.

I do not know about Zac Efron -- whether he likes to go around the area when he is not filming ( to see or visit places and friends).

Hugh is much easier to meet when he has a theatre engagement as he does meet fans at the stagedoor usually before and after each performance. But I think he is not usually seen too much when he is filming movies, except when he visits places of interest.

Maybe when the movie has been completed and promotion starts, there might be a number of talk show appearances in the New York area - and there may be chances to wait for these actors outside the TV studio?

I do not know whether media is able to cover filming activities ( maybe not) but sometimes they are allowed set visits and interviews -- that is when he do get updates on the filming.

When they were filming Les Miserables in England, there were many social media updates from fans and/or the cast themselves ( Russell Crowe was the funniest with his tweets). Not sure how this cast are prone to share filming details? Hugh might share something occasionally through his twitter or Instagram accounts?

reply

Btw, last February when the movie project was being workshopped for some key people (maybe FOX?), they had Broadway actors singing the various numbers from the musical score. Zac was unable to make the date for the actual reading, but earlier in the week, he was seen with Hugh by many theatre performers at one of the city's well-known rehearsal studios ( mostly used for theatrical productions). It made people wonder what Hugh and Zac were up to 

reply

Interesting, it's been a while since I've actually been excited for a musical, big fan of Hugh and Zac, hope it's in NYC, because I love when musicals are filmed in NYC, it's a great place for filming.

They seemed to have attended a screening of another Fox movie, Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine ?

Maybe they did come from rehearsals for SHOWMAN to attend the screening, although the most recent casting notice said the rehearsals are expected to happen in October? It could be that the project is still winding up its pre-production activities before actual rehearsals take place?
