TB EXCLUSIVE} Zac Efron In Talks To Star Opposite Hugh Jackman In “Greatest Showman On Earth” Musical
February 17, 2015

EXCLUSIVE

Efron is in talks for a supporting role in the musical rendering of P.T. Barnum’s life.

Zac Efron is in talks to star opposite Hugh Jackman in 20th Century Fox’s THE GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH. The original musical will tell the story of P.T. Barnum, a showman with a gift for hoaxing the public as he creates the three-ring circus that made him famous. The film serves as a musical rendition of the life of P.T. Barnum, who formed the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Jackman will star as Barnum.

Efron is in talks to star as Phillip, a handsome, rich young theatre producer who decides to become Barnum’s junior partner/apprentice and eventually becomes Barnum’s close friend and ringmaster. The role would require Efron to channel his Hairspray and High School Musical roots, as it requires signing and dancing.

The film will be the first original movie musical in twenty two years, since 1992’s Newsies.

Michael Gracey will direct the musical biopic, with the screenplay’s most current draft having been written by Bill Condon, with a polish by Jonathan Tropper.

Production is slated to commence late this summer, in New York.

Last year, Efron starred in the comedies That Awkward Moment, opposite Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan and Neighbors, opposite Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne. The in-demand actor will next star in We Are Your Friends, The Falling, The Associate, and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. He’ll also return for Neighbors 2 and star in an untitled project with Robert De Niro.

Efron is repped by CAA and Alchemy Entertainment.

Excellent casting if this happens! A confirmed triple threat talent, Zac also has a fanbase. He was one of the junior dance partners for that musical number of Hugh Jackman with Beyoncé in the 2009 Oscars.

I've never been a fan of Zac Efron (not even during his small performance in the 2009 Oscars), but if he is cast in this, I'll give him a chance. I would rather see a triple threat theater actor than Efron, though.

reply

To each his own, of course ...but

Did you ever seen him as Troy in High School Musical? He was very charming and was an excellent performer, even if he was just in his teens then. He could emote, sing( baritone and not tenor range), and really, really dance! And play basketball, too ...Did you see him in Hairspray?...I understand he was also in a few theatre projects when he was much younger ( "He performed in shows such as Gypsy; Peter Pan; or, The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up; Little Shop of Horrors; and The Music Man") but not on Broadway, of course. I thought he could be a good addition to the cast because he adds a bit more gravitas ( and a large fanbase ) to this film project because of his musical talent.

If you are referring to Aaron Tveit in particular ( who was supposed to have had a workshop for this movie) - hmm...I have seen him on Broadway in Catch Me If You Can ( based on the Leo DiCaprio movie) -where he did his triple threats -- sorry to say that I was somewhat disappointed - not about the singing or the dancing ...but there was no charisma that reached out to me. He didn't get a Tony nod, but his co-star Norbert Leo Butz did and won for Best Actor, even if he was just in a supporting role. In Les Miserables- he was a serviceable Enjolras and could act but I did not think he epitomized the Enjolras of the novel nor was he like the impressive Michael Maguire ( the very first Broadway Enjolras who won a Tony for the role - you could see him in the 10th anniversary concert, although at that time he was already much older and was supposedly ill during that performance). I have also watched Aaron once on TV - sorry, but I wasn't particularly impressed. Maybe he could fit the role in GREATEST SHOWMAN, but if the role is now in discussion with Zac, it could be that Zac was the preferred choice. I think when they say someone is "in talks" for the role -- it means that he is not just auditioning but that there are already active negotiations between producer(s) and actor for the role ( maybe some changes in the proposed role, maybe over salary and perks, maybe over promo work if needed, etc). We'll see how negotiations end up. Could end in a negative way and they might look for another actor?

Or are you thinking of another Broadway actor? Jeremy Jordan ( who impressed in Newsies but I am not sure if he is not tied up in another project after Harvey Weinstein replaced him with Matthew Morrison? Matthew Morrison ( I saw him in Hairspray on Broadway - hmm...)-- I would rather have Aaron over him plus he is now attached to Finding Neverland?

Or someone else?

Unless they are also film / TV actors or fully trained in dramatic theatre, I am afraid musical theatre actors tend to overact somewhat when facing the film medium, against the large landscape of a theatre stage where they need to project their emotions or notes to the last row of a theatre arena.

Of course there could be theatre actors who could learn to blossom on the big screen (e.g., Hugh Jackman). But Hugh spent 3 years in drama school at WAAPA and another year at the Actors Centre.

But I am glad that casting possibilities are already being seriously handled at this point of the project.

I saw Hairspray but not High School Musical. I'll watch High School Musical to see if my opinion changes. I felt he did a good job in Hairspray - there was just something I didn't connect with, but I'm not quite sure what it was. I don't dislike him by any means. I was just never a fan.

I wasn't referring to a specific Broadway actor. I liked Aaron Tveit's voice a lot in Les Miserables, but I hadn't given too much thought to him being cast in this role because I haven't seen him dance. I think I more so would like to see a new upcoming stage actor discovered, somewhat the way Hugh Jackman was discovered through Oklahoma. I'd like to see a fresh face - someone who can potentially have a great career. But I agree that from a business perspective it is probably a much better idea to cast someone like Zac Efron who will bring a wide fan base with him and broaden the viewership of the film. That and ... talents like Hugh Jackman are hard to discover and come by because he is definitely unique and special. Zac Efron probably is the safest bet.

Definitely a very good idea! This reminds me of when the young Michael Crawford was cast as the awkwardly funny assistant of Walter Matthau in HELLO DOLLY. He could sing and dance and was a very good actor. Pior to that he has done work on the stage and TV...He didn't look like a prospective matinee idol nor did he have a beautiful voice quality -- but he was very funny and charming. Of course, at that time, never would I think that he would originate the role of the fabulous Phantom decades later, a show that is now the longest-running on Broadway.

But if they cast someone from the theatre, it would have to be a musical theatre actor with a background in dramatic theatre, too. This is film...and acting chops will be important, not just singing and dancing.

I wonder who else are on the casting list?

reply

Yeah, it is always challenging to find someone who is equally as talented as a musical theater performer as they are a dramatic actor.

I am curious to know who will be cast, and in particular, what female characters will be in the film.

reply

Zac is a triple threat actor though, he can sing (check out his duet with Taylor Swift) he can dance.. High School Musical proves that, along with his own dance moves when he was doing Ellen Dance Dares with Taylor Swift, and he can truly act.... (Watch his Indie Films.)

reply

Yes, I have read about how he has been praised for his acting ability in some of his more recent films. This biopic sounds like a dramatic musical, not a story cobbled out of songs from a songbook. The script has had various iterations, so I am hoping that the plot line and character development will be quite fitting for what Scott Mendelson of Forbes.com describes as possibly an "Oscar-friendly" movie!

Hope Zac finally signs on the dotted line!

If all goes well, Efron will play a trapeze artist or something opposite Hugh Jackman, who’s starring as the titular showman, P.T. Barnum...

His role hasn’t been announced, but Efron’s a little too bulky to play General Tom Thumb, a dwarf...

Obviously, the Bad Grandpa actor should be cast as one of the Ringling Bros.

In the Opening Post article, there was mention of the role that Zac was in talks for --

Efron is in talks to star as Phillip, a handsome, rich young theatre producer who decides to become Barnum’s junior partner/apprentice and eventually becomes Barnum’s close friend and ringmaster

reply

cringe...he can't act his way out of a paper bag.

reply

Zac Efron isn't the problem here. Zendaya is.

I am reposting this from the ZENDAYA thread --

The tweets came from respected film blogger/critic Devin Faraci ( who used to run CHUD) --

So if you're like "Can she act?" (because Marvel's casting has been so bad before, I guess?) - yes, she is good in the role.

devin faraci ‏@devincf · 1h1 hour ago

BTW, I was at SDCC where they showed SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING footage and Zendaya was really good in it.

I understand she may be playing the role of Mary Jane in SPIDERMAN.

The same person who praises Zendaya's "acting" is the same person who gave a bad review for a masterpiece such as The Imitation Game?
Seems legit.

because Marvel's casting has been so bad before, I guess?
Apparently, the guy's never seen Gwyneth Paltrow in the Iron Man movies or Halle Berry in the X-Men movies.

reply

Devin Faraci may be a controversial film blogger but he once wrote this beautiful review of the contentious (but loved by quite a few) movie called THE FOUNTAIN by Darren Aronofsky.

"The Imitation Game" is okay, for sure not a masterpiece, he's right about that

Zac Efron and Zendaya are actors people tend to disguise because of their Disney pasts, Zac isn't that terrible as people make it seems to, and I never watched something with Zendaya so I can't say if she's a good or bad actress... why don't give them a chance?
