What SISU means

Courage, balls, determination, overcoming adversity.

I am of Finnish heritage. My parents and grandparents spoke of SISU.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie!

Yeah, that's pretty much what it means. That's cool that you are of Finnish heritage. I'm Finnish myself. I've been waiting for a long time to see this. I'd like to see it in the theater while it's still there, but most likely I'll just wait for a digital release.

It's cool to see the Finnish perspective of WW2 finally being dramatized as a hardcore action flick.

Check out the Unknown Soldier which covers the 1941-43 period Finland was allied with Nazi Germany in order to survive the Soviet invasion. It is a very realistic WWII movie (not stylized like Sisu but it does have a Sisu character). It was a miniseries in 5 parts. Very high production values with filming that reminded me of Saving Private Ryan. It is truly an authentic WWII movie from the Finnish experience.

Never heard of this. I will check it out! Thanks for the recommendation.

Here’s a good clip and shows the guy I was comparing to a Sisu character. If I recall right, this was his platoon’s first close combat with the Russians and he was basically leading his green lieutenant who is the one throwing the grenades. The lieutenant was brave but just never been in combat and before this scene he’d only been decisive in demanding people follow his unnecessary orders. When they made the attack together, they ended up coming to have respect for each other so, this was a pretty pivotal scene in the movie. Anyway, this will give you the flavor of the movie.

Great scene and a great movie.

Have you seen the previous versions of the Unknown Soldier? They're worth checking out too, but the one from 2017 is the best imo.

reply

I’ve not seen any of the other versions. I just assumed that if I was watching the 5-part version, it would have the most worth seeing. But, maybe that was a bad call. Do the other two have the same name for ease of tracking them down?

reply

The movie is based on a book and it has been adapted to a movie three times:

Unknown Soldier 1955
Unknown Soldier 1985
Unknown Soldier 2017

They're all great but the newest one is my favourite. I'd say that the 5-part version you watched is the best, but the 3 hour theatrical cut is great too.

Wow! Great scene.

Great clip! Now I definitely have to see this movie!

Wrong, it's undefinable
