Thor Inaccuracies

For anybody who is new to Norse mythology you need to know that Freya is not Thor's sister. She is Freyr's sister. She isn't even an Aesir goddess. She is a Vanir goddess that was traded to the Aesirs to bring peace to the warring factions. There is also more than three worlds in the Norse cosmos. I will admit that the three they mentioned in Thor and Beowulf are the three majors. The writers/producers/editors anybody with half a brain should have done more research on the subject. Thor is also more than just a hammer throwing lightning god. He is also the god of justice. For time constraints I realize that they couldn't explore all his facets and godly duties.

They also left out the whole point of Uthgard-Loki's pranks on Thor with the ocean, the Midgard Serpent, and Death. Thor actually gained Uthgard-Loki's respect by his accomplishments. It seems to me tossing that in at least as a throwaway line rather than making Thor look like an imbecile in the episode wouldn't have taken too much time.

Thor was powerful without the belt, it just doubled his strength. They also forgot the iron gauntlets that he wore to handle Mjolnir. Where was his chariot that was pulled by goats? A problem with mythology is that the stories are sometimes told a little differently, it depends on which version you read.

I concur, especially when you consider how many different versions of the Norse myths are recounted in the various Eddas and Sagas - I mean no offense when I say this, but it's like the different takes on the same stories in the Christian Bible's Gospels- they all say essentially the same thing and carry the same moral message, but some of the details are different due (in the case of both the Eddas & Sagas and the Bible) to the various versions being written by a number of authors at different times. Think of it like the difference between how a Lee or Meade would describe Gettysburg versus how we have it from more recent sources like Shleby Foote or Bruce Catton.

Loki was not thor's servant.

reply

No, he definitely wasn't. Thor is also not Odin's son in a good number of the stories; there is a question that this may have been something put into the versions written post-Christian conversion by Christian scholars familiar with the Greco-Roman pantheon - making a lot of the Aesir children of Odin much as most of the Olympians were Zeus' kids. Thor is also, in many versions, one of the few select Aesir who survive Ragnarok to repopulate the new kingdom forged from the ashes of Asgard. Again, later versions of the stories were altered to fit the "Eddas & Sagas = Prequel to Bible" concept. Also, I'm a bit surprised that they didn't use the proper names of Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, or the Midgard Serpent, Jormungand, when they gave us names of figures like Uthgard-Loki and Thrim who appear far less frequently than Mjolnir or Jormungand.

Awwww, it's sweet to see you all surprised that a show made for the History channel had inaccuracies. ;)

reply

First off, they didn't include EVERY mythological story of every character...I just watched the Hercules one and I know he pops up more in other myths besides just the 12 works he did...and also, like the poster before me...are you surprised the History Channel was "inaccurate"? They claim it's "historical" about their series on the creation of the universe...which is more faith/opinion than anything...

To comment on the Thor segment...

They didn't show Thor with a beard, but rather had him nearly clean shaven.

They kept calling the Giants Ogres instead of Jotunns. Jotunns are the appropriate term.

They didn't show that he had a Jotunn named Jarnsaxa for a mistress, nor did they show that his mother Jord was a Jotunn as well. Same goes for Loki, who's also a Jotunn by birth but is still considered a God.

They also didn't differentiate between the Aesir and the Vanir. They merely just called them Gods.

Maybe they had trouble pronouncing "Mjolnir" and "Jormungand."

That's a possibility.
