Who were the original Greek Gods?

The ones first born of Cronus? I got Zeus, Hera, Hades and Poseidon, but there must be more, I can't remember.

reply

Yep those are the main ones, Cronus had two other God children named Hestian (God of Hearth) and Demeter (Goddess of Fertility)...and yep...Zeus will end up sleeping with Demeter and having children with her...Zeus that incest pimp

reply

Thanks. I figured there had to be a few more because in the Zeus episode they mentioned "sister" and Hera was the only female I could remember of the original ones that I mentioned. Zeus had children with everybody. He was certainly a busy guy.

I'm pretty sure it's Hestia and she's a woman. Now she did manage to avoid Zeus, as she remained a virgin.

You're correct. Hestia is a woman and remained a virgin. The only male god of similar spelling that I can imagine the OP was thinking of would be Hephaestus, who was the god of the forge (and married to Aphrodite). He wasn't an original though; depending on the source he's either attributed to being the son of Zeus and Hera, or a sort of "virgin-birth" from Hera alone.

reply

Yep, Hephaetus was an Olympic god, Hestia not, as in she chose not to sit on a throne, she left her place to allow for Dionysus (I think). Hephaestus was tossed down by Hera which made him a cripple; He was a bastard child, you're right about that. His origin is not agreed upon that's for sure.

The OP's inquiry could be a bit confusing. I mean the original children that Cronus ate were Hades, Poseidon, Demeter, Hera, Hestia and a rock, thinking it was Zues. And then of course Zues released his brothers and sisters. But the original gods were Cronos and the rest of the Titans, including Rhea, Zues' mother, who were however descendants of Gaia, but she is viewed more as "the Earth".

Interesting though. These were my bedtime stories, I'm glad they're still being discussed.

Actually, the original Greek Gods were not the Olympians nor the Titans. They were the Protogenoi. Members included Chaos, Gaia, Uranus, Nyx, Erebus, Tartarus, Eros, Hemera, and several others.

But, depending on who you read, Nyx and Erebos came forth out of Chaos, and their union producted Aither and Hemera. Theogyny also has Ouranos coming out of Gaia. That makes the Protogenoi Chaos, Gaia, Tartaros and Eros.

reply

Plus Eros is no longer considered a Protogenoi God since in myths he became
Aphrodite's Son the Protogenoi Gods became Choas, Gaia, Ouranos (Uranus), Nyx, Erbrus, Tartarus, Pontus, & Chronos (the Father Time not the Titan who ate his kids Even though Cronus is a Time titan but only amung the other titans)
