What is up with all the goth eye makeup?

Never really cared for this series. It seemed like they kept rotating the same actors who played certain "gods" in all of the background scenes in different episodes.

I usually like any shows depicting myths - but this series didn't ever feel right, or something. And why are all the actors always wearing some form of bizarre makeup on their eyes? Did anyone else find this distracting?
