Leader of anti-gay marriage Focus on the Family: 'We've probably lost'

This on the heels of the latest Gallup poll for gay marriage (one of the most reliable polls on the issue) which shows support at a record high of 53%, while support among those 18-34 is at 70%.

You would have to be completely blind or incredibly delusional to not see the writing on the wall and the clear shifts in the percentages over the years. No, this sort of progress does not happen overnight, it does take years, but it's plain as day where things are headed. Any opposition to this sort of thing now is a huge waste of money which could be better used for goals which are more realistic for the future, and which will maintain support for these ridiculous special interest groups. That would be smart business. Ultimately, the religious who have objections to same sex marriage will have to view it exactly the same way they view divorce on the grounds of anything other than adultery: as necessary exceptions to the rules in current times.

Yes, but it's very rare for the head of such an organization to explicity admit something like this, which is why is so profound.

A little while ago the head of the Southern Baptist Convention made a similar statement, saying that "we need to prepare for gay marriage in our culture, and discuss how this topic will be addressed".

True, and it's a refreshing, realistic change of pace rather than their usual sctick of head-in-the-sand denial and eternal optimisim which does not reflect the lessons of history. A couple of years ago James Dobson did admit that his side had lost the "culture war."

Interesting. Hey, there's a guy who gets it.

^^^And to the Southern Baptist guy, I would say this: You don't have to address it or even acknowledge it. Just don't intefere with our lives and we'll get along fine.

Groups like Maggie Gallagher's NOM (which is primarily funded by the LDS and the Catholic Church) won't go away, though...as the organization leaders will invest in stirring up as much frenzy as they can...because the groups are their meal ticket.

reply

Their meal ticket will be gone in the not too distant future though if this is their sole interest. How can anyone justify this as good business? It's like watching a plane slowly crash into a mountain. This is clear evidence that these people are irrational and out of touch.

reply

Well sure...but the Vatican is irrational and out of touch, yet I don't think it's going anywhere. I gues NOM's influence will continue to diminish, but there will always be an eager, bitter audience with an appetitie to supress others (and therefor feel better about themselves) who's thrilled to buy their cr@p.

Well, nothing that has some popular support never completely goes away. There are still people who oppose black equality and women's equality. And, there are people who think that the earth is flat and those who buy hula hoops and vinyl records.

So, there will always be people who hate gays.
