I like it much more than the first cut.

The truth is out there.

Does it really make any difference to the story overall?

I can't see how it could be that different, other than cosmetically.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

Did they add anyting from the Showtime version that wasn't in the syfy verison?

Let me take a few swings at that:

1. It's nice to see how tightly the storyline was edited when there was little, if any, time pressure to simply get it out the door.

2. Over 7 minutes was dialog that added nothing to the story was removed.

3. Considering that the original was shot on 16mm film in 4x3 format, I find it amazing how well it was reframed in widescreen.

4. Visual effects -- 12 years later and ALL the CGI effects were redone pretty much from scratch. Anyone who can't see the vast improvements never actually watched the original. Even the opening title sequence was redone.

5. O'Neill finally gets a win thanks to the updated VFX and shoots something down. I won't spoil it more because in the original cut SG-1 had its rear handed to them at every turn without a single win.

5. The full frontal nudity was cut. Disclosure: I rather enjoy watching a little nudity now and then. The thing is, it was totally out of place with everything else ever in the Stargate franchise. Watch the original cut if you miss it that much.

6. The music was redone using Joel Goldsmith's work rather than the movie score. It's much more fitting and better timed to the onscreen story. It also adds music continuity to the rest of the series.

7. Every line delivered by Christopher Judge (Teal'c) was relooped. I went back and rewatched (and relistened to) the original and it was well worth the effort.

I could quantify more reasons why I enjoyed the recut of the pilot but I'll stop at lucky 7.
